The world's first Right-Hand Drive Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG prototype, built as a one-off special order for rock legend Eric Clapton.
In 2001, Eric Clapton partnered with Mercedes-Benz as a brand ambassador to help introduce the G-Class to the American market. As part of this sponsorship deal, the G55 AMG was introduced on his album cover Reptile, alongside a commercial ad where Clapton shares his love with the G-class (search Eric Clapton Gwagen Promo for video on Youtube). Rather than accepting a traditional endorsement fee, Clapton requested something far more exclusive: a bespoke, factory-built Right-Hand Drive G55 AMG prototype created specifically for him.
The result is a true 1-of-1.
Hand-built to Clapton's personal specification, this extraordinary G55 features an exceptionally rare cream leather interior, rare pre-merger AMG wheels, twin pipe AMG side exhaust, A 5. 5L AMG engine conversion, bespoke interior featuring burled wood veneer trim across the door handles, dashboard and AMG gear selector, bespoke headliner, bespoke leather trimmed dash and panels, bespoke multimedia system with integrated headrest screens, and a custom high-end audio system that cost over £25, 000 when new, an astonishing figure for the time.
Accompanying the vehicle is a signed Certificate of Authenticity from AMG, confirming that it is an original AMG conversion.
Its rarity extends far beyond its celebrity ownership. Only 45 Right-Hand Drive G500s were ever produced, and just 2 are known to have received the official AMG G55 conversion. This example is believed to be the earliest Right-Hand Drive G55 AMG in existence, making it one of the most historically significant G-Wagens ever built.
This is far more than a collector's car, it is a remarkable piece of automotive and music history. A vehicle commissioned by one of the greatest musicians of all time, built during a pivotal chapter in the G-Class story, and preserved as a unique artifact of both Mercedes-Benz and AMG heritage.
