Description

I am a member of the Citroen Car Club and have been on quite a few rallies in France in my DS. I fancied a change from the DS and I bought this car in March 2025 after it had been recommissioned by two well known members of the Citroen Car Club.

When I got it it was like new underneath and still had the paper bar code stickers on some of the suspension components but it had stood unused on someone’s driveway for over 30 years so the paintwork is not perfect.
The story passed on to me was that it had been taken off the road before its first MOT with an engine problem and that the mileage was genuine at 9, 677 miles. I have no way of verifying this but that is the mileage recorded at its MOT in March 2025.

Recommissioning included:

Rebuilding the engine
New brake pads and discs
Refurbishing the wheels
New larger radiator, twin electric fans and temperature gauge
New clutch
Cleaned flywheel
New camshaft
Polished valves
Cleaned intercooler
New water pump

In addition I asked the following to be fitted
A DAB radio
A bluetooth entertainment system compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
A front facing dashcam
A rear parking camera (not working at the moment for some reason)
A towbar and associated electrics (used once only)
A high level rear brake light

Since buying the car I have covered about 7500 miles including a two week trip over the French Alps (Rallye des Alpes 2025).

As the car had been unused for so long it was expected that there would be a some snagging issues to deal with and the following is a list of jobs I have had done.

Rectify engine oil leak - Fitted new oil filler tube
New throttle cable
New front spheres
New LHM octopus loom
New LHM return loom
Remove sump and reseal
Remove camshaft pulley and replace oil seal
Replace turbo return pipe
Replace steering column headlight stalk
New accumulator sphere
New tailgate struts
Fix wiring to the dual electric fans and cure coolant leak

I have also had the rear window and rear side windows tinted.

The car was MOTd and serviced in March 2026

Included are the following
New Clutch cable
Aux belt
Various manuals and brochures

Good things - it all works including electric sunroof (tilt and slide), electronic mirrors and 4 windows.
It is rust free.
It is VERY economical.
It is very rare - only 3 Turbo diesel Hurricanes on the road in the UK.
Bad things - paintwork is not perfect
In torrential rain the sunroof leaks
The rear parking camera does not work
The glove box has a broken hinge (still works though)
The water temp gauge reads 10C too high (not really a problem)
The rear parcel shelf isn't the original one as it is blue.
The back of the rear seat is faded in the sun.

The photos of the car without stickers on it were taken today (July 2026). The other photos, with stickers, were taken earlier this year or last year and are provided to show that it is a very useable car and has been on some adventures since being recommissioned. 1992 Citroën BX TZD Turbo Hurricane.

The Citroën BX was produced from 1982 to1993.
It was designed by Marcello Gandini of Bertone.
It uses Citroën's famous hydropneumatic system to provide power steering, self-levelling suspension and power brakes.

BX TZD Turbo
TZ = the highest trim level, which included front and rear electric windows, electric mirrors, electric sunroof, velour upholstery, remote central locking and fog lights.
D = Diesel
All TZD Turbos were BX17s, i. e. with the 1769 cc engine.
(There was a BX19 TZD but it was never turbo charged)
Power = 90 bhp, 0-60 mph = 10 secs, 62. 8mpg at 56mph

Hurricane
A special edition in 1992 on the BX GTi and the BX TZD Turbo.
They came in only two colours - black and triton green.

Hurricanes were assembled in the Citroën factory in Rennes. When sold in France they were called the Ourane.

How many left?
In 1994 there were 368 on the road. So probably this was, more or less, the total number ever made.
In 2024 there were two on the road and 13 with a SORN.

The story passed down to me from members of the CCC was that this car had been laid up on someone's drive before its first MOT due to an unspecified engine issue and sat there until last year when they rescued and recommissioned it. I cannot verify this but accepted it when I bought the car.
