This is my 2001 Cherokee, it's going because apparently there is a limit to how many interesting cars one household can have. Do I want to sell it - no.
But here we are.
It’s lifted, square, faintly ridiculous and cooler than almost anything built this century.
This one has already had the frightening stuff done:
New AMC cylinder head, gasket, bolts and associated gaskets
Water pump and thermostat
Replacement gearbox
Engine and gearbox mounts
Full front-end rebuild
Track bar, track rod ends, UJs, steering damper, control arms and suspension work
New brakes, windscreen and tyres
Passenger footwell professionally welded
Door and tailgate wiring repaired
Tow bar and electrics
Inside, it’s been made genuinely usable. Full soundproofing, refreshed interior, new headliner, electric seats, 10-inch wireless Apple CarPlay and a reversing camera.
167, 239 miles. Fresh MOT until 30 July 2027.
It’s a 25-year-old modified Jeep. It has character, patina and an MOT history anyone can view. It does not drive like a new Qashqai, and thank Christ for that.
It runs on diesel, old-school engineering and pure vibes.

No, it isn’t cheap.
Neither was making it this good.

It’s compact, square, simple and instantly recognisable. The 60th Anniversary trim adds heated leather and a little civility, while the lift, tyres and stripes give this one genuine presence.
My favourite thing is the way an ordinary journey never feels entirely ordinary. You sit high, look down that long square bonnet and feel like you’re driving something with a point of view. It’s the kind of car people notice.
What makes this one special is the balance. It isn’t an untouched museum piece and it isn’t a battered off-road toy. It has the stance and personality people want, a huge amount of serious mechanical work behind it, and enough modern comfort to use properly.
There are faster cars, quieter cars and more sensible cars.
Very few have this much soul.
