It genuinely drives beautifully. It feels solid, comfortable and reassuring on the road, while also being brilliant for muddy tracks, fields, taking the dog out or loading everything into the enormous boot. It gives you much of the capability of a traditional 4x4 without feeling big or cumbersome in everyday use.
The high and low range both work correctly, giving it excellent control in slippery or difficult conditions. It’s a particularly capable soft-roader and far more useful off the beaten track than an ordinary estate car.

Its MOT history is exceptional for a 20-year-old car. It has never failed an MOT, and both of its two most recent tests were passed without a single advisory.
The engine and gearbox are smooth, the clutch feels excellent, the air conditioning is cold and everything works as it should. The leather interior is clean and in very good condition for its age.
The body has a few minor age-related marks, as you would expect, but the bumpers and exterior trim are being professionally prepared and refinished in satin black, and the entire car is being thoroughly cleaned. This will give it a smart, slightly more modern and rugged appearance.
This isn’t an average dog-rough Subaru that has simply been polished up for sale. It’s a genuinely well-maintained example with the important mechanical work already completed, excellent history and genuine mileage. It’s a lovely thing to drive and feels as though it has plenty of useful life left in it.
Good Outbacks of this generation are becoming increasingly difficult to find, particularly with this mileage, condition and history. In my opinion, well-preserved examples like this have the potential to become increasingly desirable and appreciate in value.

£3, 495 – located near Norwich, Norfolk. I bought this Outback because I’ve always liked these older Subarus: they’re tough, dependable and refreshingly different from a modern SUV. This one immediately stood out because of its genuine low mileage, two-owner history, exceptional MOT record and enormous collection of service paperwork.
My favourite thing about it is how versatile it feels. It’s comfortable and smooth on the road, yet the permanent four-wheel drive and proper high and low-range gears make it brilliant on muddy tracks and rough country lanes. There’s also an enormous boot for the dog, luggage or outdoor equipment.
It isn’t a tired example that has simply been polished for sale. The clutch, wheel bearings, brakes, suspension components, rocker-cover gaskets and spark plugs have all been attended to. It drives beautifully and feels as though it has many years left in it.
With its boxer engine, leather interior, heated seats and genuine all-weather capability, it has real character. Good examples are becoming increasingly difficult to find, which is why I believe this one is particularly special.
