Description

This is a genuine 1972 Volkswagen T2 Crossover Bay Window Camper, registered on 07/ 06/ 1972, with 88, 000 miles. The 1972 Crossover is a particularly interesting T2, combining the classic Early Bay front-end styling with a number of later developments. It retains the distinctive low front indicators and early styling, while featuring the larger later-style rear lights and revised rear bodywork. It also benefits from front disc brakes and rear drums, giving improved braking and usability compared with the earlier drum-braked Bays. The camper has been very well looked after and is remarkably rust-free for its age. A pre-MOT check has been carried out and the only issue identified was the exhaust, which has now been replaced. The previous owner fitted a ** brand-new 1. 6 twin-carb Weber engine**. It sounds excellent and makes for a lovely, comfortable and enjoyable drive. The camper comes with an extensive service and invoice folder, Goodyear tyres all round, a new leisure battery and a new main vehicle battery. Inside is a practical 2-berth camper setup with a working sink, internal cooker and Bluetooth stereo. It also comes with the original VW awning tent attachment supplied in 1972, which provides sleeping accommodation for a further two people. Also included are a breathable all-weather cover and the original two keys. As a 1972 historic vehicle, it is tax and MOT exempt, although it will be supplied with a fresh MOT for additional peace of mind. It has that unmistakable classic VW character, but with some of the later improvements that make it a genuinely enjoyable vehicle to drive. The Crossover is one of our favourite Bay Window variants because of the unusual combination of its early and later styling. The low front indicators and classic front end give it the look that so many people associate with the iconic early Bays, while the later rear lights and mechanical improvements make it a more usable classic. This particular example is especially appealing because it isn't simply something to keep in a garage. It is a camper that you can actually use. The 2-berth interior, original 1972 VW awning and additional camping equipment mean you can jump in and head away for a weekend. Our favourite thing about it is probably the way it drives. With the brand-new 1. 6 twin-carb Weber engine fitted by the previous owner, it sounds fantastic and is a surprisingly comfortable drive for a 1972 vehicle. Then there is the attention it gets — it is a genuine head-turner. Good, rust-free T2s are becoming increasingly difficult to find, and the 1972 Crossover is a particularly interesting and collectible variant. For us, that's what makes this one stand out: it has the looks, the character, the history, and the usability — but more importantly, it also represents a strong investment opportunity in an increasingly sought-after segment of the classic VW market. Values of well-preserved, usable Bay Window campers have been steadily rising, and the Crossover models in particular are gaining recognition among collectors for their unique specification and limited production overlap. This is exactly the kind of example that appeals to both enthusiasts and investors alike: usable enough to enjoy, but rare and desirable enough to hold long-term value. Whether you're looking for your first classic VW, a camper for summer adventures, a distinctive addition to a collection, or a smart investment in a growing classic market, this is a T2 that ticks all the right boxes — and one you'll be glad you secured early.
