We are pleased to present this superb 1969 Volkswagen Type 2 T2 Bay Window, the recipient of a comprehensive restoration - a rare opportunity to acquire a truly individual example.
This early Bay Window was imported from California and was first registered in the UK in March 2008. It was initially registered to its first custodian for just six months, who happened to be Java Restorations, before being sold to its current owner. The new custodian then commissioned Java Restorations to carry out a nut-and-bolt custom rebuild. This T2 provided the perfect foundation for the project, as the body and structure were rock solid and rust-free, meaning no welding or replacement body panels were required.
The inspiration behind this magnificent build was to create a standout picnic bus to enjoy valuable time with the family. Its nickname, “Ozzy”, was inspired after its first ‘Best in Show’ win at the Bus Types VW Show at Oswestry Showground, before going on to win ‘Best in Show’ at a further two events. To top things off, it became the front cover feature vehicle in VolksWorld Camper magazine in July 2011. Still looking box fresh after 17 years of low-mileage use, the baton is ready to be passed to the lucky new guardian to enjoy the admiration this unique vehicle brings.
The bus is finished in Magnolia Mica over a vibrant metallic Java Green - not to be confused with the historic Volkswagen Java Green. This is a modern colour used by Audi and BMW as an “exclusive” or “individual” paintwork option, adding to the sense of individuality and exclusivity that this T2 embodies.
The overall concept for the exterior was to retain a largely stock appearance. For a cleaner look, the fuel filler flap lock and the US-spec side reflectors were removed. The chrome bumpers, combined with the chrome SSP EMPI-style five-spoke wheels contribute significantly to its eye-catching presence, ensuring this T2 stands out wherever it goes. The subtle lowered stance has been achieved using front beam adjusters and the rear spring plates rotated on their splines.
Power comes from a single-port 1, 600cc engine paired with the standard four-speed manual gearbox. A stainless steel Vintage Speed tuck-tail exhaust system completes the setup, peeking neatly beneath the rear bumper.
The interior has undergone a complete refurbishment by Iconic VW Interiors and Custom Classic Retro Auto Trim, specialists we at Absolute VW have worked closely with and whose craftsmanship we can confidently vouch for. The interior colour scheme mirrors the exterior paintwork, with off-white vinyl upholstery for the front seats and rear L-shaped rock ’n’ roll bench, along with the footstool, rear mattress, door cards, and front kick panel. These are complemented by contrasting green cushions and blinds. Fitted sisal carpets run throughout the interior, finished with matching white edging to complete the comprehensive reupholstery.
Going an extra mile with the interior, the small wood cabinet behind the driver features an integrated elevating TV. There are two speakers and a subwoofer located beneath the rear L-bench along with a JVC stereo headhunt. The dashboard has been coloured coded in Magnolia Mica matching the roof with Java Green painted plastic trims and vents to complete the comprehensive interior transformation.
