The legendary V8 LT5 prepared by Lotus's competition department in collaboration with GM: an extraordinary engine
Beneath its bonnet lies the spectacular 5. 7-litre V8 LT5, the true heart of the ZR-1. Developed with Lotus's involvement, this engine sets itself apart from the Corvette's traditional V8 through a particularly sophisticated architecture: 32 valves and four overhead camshafts.
Completely aluminium, the LT5 produced 380 bhp and offered a remarkable combination of flexibility, character and high-revving performance.
To harness this power, Chevrolet paired it with a ZF 6-speed manual gearbox and a deeply optimised chassis. FX3 BILSTEIN adjustable suspension, uprated brakes, 315 mm rear tyres and ABS complete a package designed to rival the finest European sports cars directly.
A Corvette capable of challenging Porsche and Ferrari
At its launch, the ZR-1 wasn't simply a more powerful Corvette: it was the American answer to European Supercars.
With a 0 to 97 km/ h time achieved in under 4. 7 seconds, a quarter-mile in approximately 13. 4 seconds and a top speed approaching 290 km/ h, its performance was simply exceptional for the early 1990s.
Even its engine received special treatment: the LT5 was assembled by Mercury Marine, whose expertise in aluminium machining had been selected by General Motors. Each engine underwent particularly meticulous assembly and bench testing before joining the Corvette factory in Bowling Green.
A legend also forged by records
The ZR-1 quickly proved it wasn't just quick on the road. In March 1990, a standard ZR-1 set seven international FIA records, notably in endurance events over 5, 000 and 8, 000 km as well as a 24-hour record at over 283 km/ h average speed.
A spectacular demonstration of the LT5's robustness and potential.
A cockpit typical of the 90s
Onboard, the ZR-1 offers a unique atmosphere, with its futuristic dashboard for the era and its particularly comprehensive instrumentation. A genuine American cockpit, now become an essential element of the C4 Corvette's charm.
And that's precisely what makes this ZR-1 so endearing: it combines technology, performance, history and character, whilst offering today a driving experience radically different from modern sports cars.
A rare opportunity
The 1990 Corvette ZR-1 is among those automobiles that tell a story. A Corvette developed with Lotus, powered by an exceptional 32-valve V8, equipped with a 6-speed manual gearbox and designed to take on the Porsches and Ferraris of its era.
