This is more than just a Golf 1 — it is a piece of South African motoring history. The Golf 1 has a special place in the country, with Volkswagen beginning local production at Uitenhage in 1978 and the model becoming one of the most successful and recognisable cars ever built in South Africa. The original Golf 1 already had a strong performance reputation here, with the 1600cc GTS being introduced as the sporty version, featuring its distinctive styling, GTS badging, four headlamps, sports equipment and a more aggressive appearance. When Volkswagen continued developing the Golf 1 into the Citi Golf, the car became a uniquely South African icon and remained in production for decades, long after the original Golf had been replaced internationally. Volkswagen eventually produced hundreds of thousands of Citi Golfs in South Africa, making it a huge part of our country's automotive culture, but the special editions became increasingly important to collectors because of their limited production. The Citi GTS represents the final era of that legendary Golf 1 story and was produced in an extremely limited run of only 375 cars, making it one of the rarest and most desirable Citi Golf variants. Unlike an ordinary Golf 1 that was produced in large numbers, there are only 375 GTS examples from this particular limited edition, which gives the car genuine collector appeal and makes finding another one increasingly difficult. The GTS came with distinctive sporting touches, including 15-inch gunmetal alloy wheels, sports seats and sportier suspension, giving it a character that separates it from the standard Citi Golf. Volkswagen eventually ended Citi Golf production in 2009 after the Golf 1 had become one of the longest-running and most iconic models in South African automotive history. So when you look at this car, you aren't simply looking at an old Golf — you're looking at a limited-production piece of the final chapter of the South African Golf 1, with only 375 GTS examples made. That rarity, combined with the history, originality and growing collector interest surrounding these cars, is what makes this particular Golf something worth preserving rather than treating like an ordinary used car. For a collector, VW enthusiast or someone who appreciates South African motoring history, owning one of these is about owning a small piece of the Golf 1 legacy that simply cannot be replaced.
