Volvos sold in Japan are exactly the same as those sold in in Sweden, Europe or the UK. They are manufactured in the same Volvo plants to the same standards as all Volvos and do not have inferior rust protection or underseal as some internet trolls would have you believe. The differences are limited to the Navigation Head Unit and Maps, display language, the odometer being in kms not miles and the remote key fobs operating at a different frequency. These, apart from the Japanese Maps, have all been changed to suit the UK Market. The Japan market 426MHZ frequency key fobs are retained. Lost keys can be replaced and programmed by Volvo Main Dealers or specialist Volvo Dealers with Factory VIDA.
As Volvo Japan is pitched as a luxury car in Japan, the specifications were more comprehensive in Japan than the equivalent trim level in the UK. For example This SE LUX comes equipped with the following which were listed as options in the UK at the time; Gearshift paddles. Power passenger seat, Heated front seats (adding the passenger seat), Linear walnut trim, Rear seat entertainment system, 19” ‘Black Chrome’ Fenrir Alloy Wheels, Front and Rear Park Assist (adding Front park assist), Styling pack – Front and Rear Bumper Skid Plates, BLIS with CTS, Lane Departure Warning with DAC, Keyless Drive with PCC, Dark tinted Windows – rear side and cargo area. Back in the day, this spec would have cost more than £6, 500 extra in the UK in options and upgrades.
Documents will include;
Originals: V5C, MOT Test Certificate with DVLA stamp, Volvo Japan Service History.
Copies: Japan Auction Sheet, Japan Export certificate, HRMC NOVA Letter (confirming import duty and VAT paid correct), VIDA Info sheet.

Why buy a Volvo imported from Japan? Basically they were better spec’d and are in better condition with lower mileage than the equivalent UK supplied Volvo.
When this car was built, Volvo mostly sold or leased Diesels in the UK. Japan got petrol engines and much better equipment, kit wise, they were loaded!
Because of Japan’s public transport culture, cars are a personal purchase, there are no company cars and no office parking, for six days a week most Japanese Volvo owners are leaving their Volvo at home while they spend long hours at the office! And they rarely take holidays, and when they do, usually take no more than four days at a time.
When Volvos are driven in Japan, they are on far superior roads with no potholes, smooth tarmac without chippings and practically no road salt, that’s why they are rust free underneath.
They are driven slower, urban areas are restricted to 18mph with most motorways typically restricted to 50mph and the Japanese are very compliant and obey the speed limits. They are also more considerate and polite drivers, there is no ‘road rage’ you rarely hear a horn being beeped and they always let you in when joining from a side road. Parking lots have much bigger bays so there is less opportunity to get your doors ‘dinged’.
Did you know that some Japanese drivers have never ‘overtaken’ another vehicle on a two lane road? This is because many roads restrict overtaking and drivers do not want to exceed the speed restriction. In the main they are happy to patiently follow the car in front however slowly it’s going.
It’s for these reasons that Volvos from Japan are in such good condition not for the often mentioned 2 yearly ‘Shaken’ (Japanese MOT) being overly rigorous. Although the testing stations being Ministry owned does mean that you won’t get a dodgy MOT!
In Japan a Volvo is seen as an exotic Swedish brand (IKEA is popular in Japan) and sold at a premium, to put this into context it would be more expensive than an equivalent Lexus. So the previous Japanese owners were quite affluent and likely purchased the vehicle as a statement not as a tool and certainly not as a ‘Daily Driver’.
Volvos sold in Japan were manufactured on the same production lines to the same standards and specifications as similar right hand drive models, including those for the UK, the only differences being a speedometer and odometer in kilometres, information in the Japanese language, Japan radio FM frequencies and remote control keys used a different frequency. As a global product all these Volvos had the same underbody treatment applied at their factories in either Gothenburg or Ghent. This car was assembled in Ghent, Belgium.
