Description

1944 Indian Chief 1200cc – Australian Military History

Offered for sale is my 1944 Indian Chief, a very special motorcycle with documented history connected to Australia.

The motorcycle was originally sourced in Australia and was described in the accompanying documentation as an “Australian Army Indian 44 Rolling Basket Chief.” It was subsequently imported to Norway, where it was carefully restored and registered for road use.

The motorcycle is powered by the classic 1200cc (74 cu in) Indian V-twin engine with 3-speed transmission. The restoration included extensive mechanical work, and the documentation accompanying the motorcycle contains records and receipts relating to engine parts, restoration work and its history.

It is finished in a striking period-style Rainbow colour scheme, which makes the motorcycle particularly distinctive. The paintwork, extensive chrome, leather solo saddle and classic Indian details present extremely well, as can be seen from the photographs.

I purchased the motorcycle in 2016 from its previous long-term Norwegian owner. During my ownership it has been used extremely sparingly – only a few short trips totalling approximately 50–60 km – and has otherwise been stored indoors in a heated private garage.

The motorcycle comes with an extensive history file containing historical material, technical information, restoration records, receipts and documentation relating to its Australian origin and subsequent life in Norway.

This is not simply an old motorcycle, but a highly distinctive piece of Indian motorcycle history that has been carefully preserved.

The motorcycle is located in Norway and can be inspected by arrangement. Further documentation and detailed photographs are available to serious prospective buyers.

I have owned this Indian Chief since 2016 and have treated it more as a piece of history than as an everyday motorcycle. I have only ridden it on a handful of short trips and have kept it stored indoors in a heated garage.

What makes it special to me is the combination of its 1944 heritage, Australian history, beautiful restoration, distinctive Rainbow colour scheme and the unusually extensive documentation that accompanies it.

After more than ten years in my ownership, I feel the time has come for it to pass to another enthusiast or collector who will appreciate and preserve it for the future.
