The Candy Blue carbon-fibre bodywork covers the tank, headlight nacelle, seat cowl and front mudguard, complemented beautifully by the white trellis frame and distinctive red detailing. Carbon fibre is used extensively throughout, including the engine covers, chain guard and exhaust heat shield, while the black-finished titanium Akrapovič exhaust adds another layer of quality and character.
There is an incredible amount of detail everywhere you look. The chequered pattern running throughout the design is a particularly fitting touch, paying homage to the FTR’s flat-track heritage and giving the bike a genuine racing-inspired identity rather than simply being a cosmetic special edition.
The FTR itself was inspired by Indian’s championship-winning FTR 750 flat-track racer, and that competition influence is evident throughout the design.
At its heart is Indian’s characterful 1, 203cc liquid-cooled V-twin, producing a muscular 120Nm of torque, with a six-speed gearbox and a 9, 000rpm redline. It delivers the kind of effortless shove that makes the FTR every bit as exciting on the road as it looks standing still.
Despite its muscular appearance, the FTR is remarkably agile, with lightweight 17-inch cast wheels, fully adjustable Öhlins suspension and powerful Brembo brakes. The result is a motorcycle that feels planted and confidence-inspiring while retaining the nimble character you’d expect from something born from flat-track racing.
Technology is present, but importantly, it doesn’t overwhelm the experience. The 4-inch RIDE COMMAND touchscreen provides navigation, Bluetooth connectivity and a wealth of useful riding information, while three riding modes – Rain, Standard and Sport – allow the character of the bike to be tailored to the conditions. Lean-angle-sensitive ABS, stability control, traction control and wheelie mitigation add reassurance when you want it, without taking away from the raw mechanical character that makes the FTR so appealing.
It is a lovely balance of old-school motorcycle character and modern engineering: a big, powerful V-twin, beautiful carbon fibre, proper Öhlins suspension, Brembo braking and an Akrapovič exhaust, with just enough technology to enhance the ride rather than distract from it.
