Description
I bought the XJS as a ‘barn find’ project in January 2025. The car had been unused in a private collection for over 20 years. The last MoT expired in 2001. V5 in my name.
I have completed the following recommissioning work:
IRS removed painted and greased. Refitted along with fresh diff oil, new radius arms with ‘pollybushes’ (rust proofing applied using Bilt Hamber S-50 before fitting) and new rear antiroll bar drop links and bushes. New ‘over axle’ exhaust pipes also fitted.
Rear brakes completely renewed, including new rear discs, shims, calipers, pads, handbrake calipers stripped and rebuilt with new pads. Handbrake adjusted. Some new copper rear brake lines. Rear brake pressure delay valve replaced. Old brake fluid flushed out and fresh brake fluid added. Original rear calipers available for rebuilding.
Front brakes completely renewed, including discs calipers and pads (also included is a new set of drilled discs).
Wheels/ tyres/ steering front wheel bearings and track rod ends replaced (tracking will need to be checked and adjusted). NOS steering arms fitted. Five new matching tyres and metal valves also fitted.
Interior work includes a new roof lining, passenger seat module replaced (original available for repair. Just needs one relay replacing) and seats cleaned and treated with leather cleaner/ conditioner. In addition, a DAB+ radio/ CD player has been fitted(original radio/ cassette player available with radio code).
Engine management etc. A rebuilt ECU has been fitted (original ECU also available). Other parts fitted include main relay, coil, ignition amplifier, CPS, crankshaft pulley, (original crankshaft pulley available), new battery, both drive belts, distributor cap, rotor arm, plug leads and plugs. New fuel gauge sender unit also fitted.
Gearbox oil and filter changed along with new O ring and gasket.
power steering. One pipe replaced along with fresh power steering fluid.
Cooling system. Top and bottom radiator hoses replaced along with thermostat and thermostat housing. New heater valve and hoses replaced. System filled with fresh coolant. Temperature sensor also replaced.
General Comments. All the gauges and switches work. The electric door mirrors work, but the switch terminals would benefit from cleaning. The electric seats, windows and aerial work as they should. The wood veneers are in very good condition as is the leather interior. The battery cover is present along with the spare wheel cover. The wheels are in good condition, but in the long-term I would have them refurbished. The fuel pump and fuel filter were replaced prior to me purchasing the car (receipts available)
Drivers handbook: All documents in excellent condition, presented in a wallet. Rare to find in this condition.
Work needed to complete the recommissioning: Change the engine oil and filter (oil and filter supplied). Top up gearbox and power steering oil levels (oil supplied). Check/ adjust the tracking. Replace off side front seatbelt mounting bolt. (bolt supplied). The air con will need re-gassing. The bodywork is very good, but has a few ‘dings’ form long-term storage. There is a rust bubble on the lower nearside front wing. The oil cooler pipes have been disconnected and will need to be replaced. Having started the XJS on several occasions (I have a short video of the car running), it has developed a problem and will not start
