If you’re in the market for a transaxle classic Alfa, you need to come and see this 1977 Alfetta 2000 GT Sprint Veloce. I could wax lyrical about it endlessly (and I probably will), but no amount of words will convey its fantastic condition better than checking it out in person for yourself.

There’s a reason why we have included so many photos of the underside of the car; it’s what makes this an almost unique proposition. The Alfetta coupe is one of the great driver’s cars of the seventies, but sadly it was also one of the great rust victims too. Most survivors have been cut, patched and welded back together, and sadly this has often been done badly. This one is very different. Supplied new to California and kept there for 41 years, its floor has genuinely never been touched. The factory spot welds are still on the inner arches, exactly where Alfa Romeo put them in 1977.

It’s just as outstanding on top too. Rosso red over tan leather (the definitive Italian GT combination?), the paintwork gleams, the wheels are spotless and the brightwork is precisely that – bright! The previous owner preferred the bumper-less appearance, but we have a set of chrome bumpers which could be fitted if this is more your taste. It is in stunning cosmetic condition – we welcome any inspection or test, we’re confident there’s nothing you’ll find.

The interior is certainly more than presentable, but there is cracking on the dash and the leather seats do show their age. We mention these slight flaws only in the interest of complete transparency, on any other Alfetta they’d come way down a long list of panels needing replacing and days of welding just to make it roadworthy.

The “2000 GT” model was a US-only version of the Alfetta which boasted the 2. 0-litre Nord engine under the bonnet (in Europe, the 2. 0 was only offered in the GTV). To meet strict California emissions restrictions these were all fitted with the convoluted and problematic Spica fuel injection system. For the last two years of production, these Atlantic variants were badged as ‘Sprint Veloce’, as this example is. A total of 13, 715 Alfettas were built for the US market and survivors are now a rare find – particularly here in the UK.

Since arriving on our shores it has also been properly sorted mechanically by Richard Drake, respected classic Alfa mechanic. It has been converted to European carburettor specification, fitted with a lightened flywheel, the gearbox fully rebuilt and no stone has been left unturned. Everything has been treated to preserve it in this uncommon condition for many years to come. As such, it is now not only a stunning example of the Alfetta GT to look at, but also to drive.

The speedo is currently showing 20, 120 miles. There is a decent chunk of paperwork (receipts, service reports, etc) from its time both in the States and since arriving in the UK. Included in this is the ‘Arese Certificato di Origine’ from Alfa themselves, recording the car as a 2000 GT built for the California market.

We’ve dropped the price as we come to the close of summer, as we don’t want to waste a lovely car like this. Someone needs to be cherishing it as much as it deserves.
