Description

1996 Land Rover Discovery 1 3. 9 V8i Automatic — 64, 517 miles — family owned since c. 1998 — MOT February 2027

First registered on 1 August 1996, this dark-blue Discovery 1 V8i automatic is showing 64, 517 miles. Its MOT history supports the mileage, rising from 55, 118 miles in 2014 to 64, 375 miles at the most recent test. The MOT runs until 15 February 2027.

My father bought this Discovery 1 from Fords of Winsford when it was around 18 months old, and it has remained in our family ever since, with keeper changes within the family. It spent an extended period off the road before my brother and I recommissioned it in 2021/ 22. I then used it as my daily driver for around two years, and it has continued to run very well.

It retains its factory 3. 9-litre Rover V8 and automatic specification and has not been converted into an off-road project. It remains a very complete, period-looking Discovery with seven seats, twin sunroofs, Alpine roof lights, high/ low range and centre diff lock, original alloy wheels and towbar.

There is useful paperwork covering the recommissioning and subsequent maintenance. Recent work includes five 235/ 70 R16 Dunlop tyres, an automatic-transmission filter and sump-gasket service, ignition coil and plugs, exhaust sections and a mass-airflow meter.

A comprehensive service at 63, 650 miles in August 2024 included oils and filters, spark plugs, brake servicing, two new front shock absorbers, new shock-absorber turrets/ rings/ bushes and replacement of a leaking cylinder-head core plug. In February 2026 it received a documented inner-sill/ front-floor repair, rear-axle ball joint, emissions adjustment and MOT preparation at a cost of £1, 438. 26.

The body is straight and presentable for a 30-year-old Discovery, but this is an honest usable example rather than a restored show car. There is lacquer and paint wear, chips, scuffs and some age-related corrosion. The headlining is marked and sagging around the sunroofs, which are sealed shut, and no radio is currently fitted. The current MOT advisories are a minor oil leak and slight play in the offside-front wheel bearing. These points are reflected in the price.

The underside and recent repair are available for inspection, and knowledgeable buyers or independent inspections are welcome. It comes with its V5C, MOT history and supporting invoices.

£7, 250 ono. Viewing near Penrith by appointment.

What makes this Discovery special is how remarkably original and unmodified it remains. So many Discovery 1s have been broken for parts, heavily modified for off-road use or separated from their V8 engines. Complete, standard-looking examples like this one are becoming increasingly hard to find.

The original 3. 9-litre Rover V8 is the heart of the car. It has the familiar burble, effortless low-speed character and mechanical simplicity that make these engines so well loved. It is also comparatively straightforward to understand and work on by modern car standards.

Inside, it still has the wonderfully airy, practical Discovery cabin (I think of it as a greenhouse on wheels), including the two side-facing jump seats in the rear load area. These seats have barely been used and make it a proper seven-seat classic rather than simply an old 4x4.

It has genuine family history and is usable enough that I happily ran it as my daily driver for two years. It offers classic Land Rover character and V8 charm without the increasingly daunting cost of buying a comparable Defender.

I am not selling it because I have fallen out of love with it. A 2008 Discovery 3 with 160k on the clock has taken over everyday duties, I have recently rekindled my enthusiasm for motorcycles, and my wife has reasonably pointed out that the classic BMW 850R motorbike I have just bought also needs somewhere to live.
