Offered for sale from my private motorcycle collection is my 1998 Yamaha YZF-R1 4XV, finished in the iconic original red and white colour scheme.
This is the highly desirable first-year 4XV R1, the model that launched the R1 name in 1998 and is now firmly established as a genuine modern classic.
What particularly sets this example apart is its originality. So many early R1s were modified, crashed, fitted with aftermarket exhausts, bodywork, indicators and tail tidies during their lives. This bike has survived remarkably well and remains in very original specification.
It retains its original red and white bodywork and graphics, original exhaust, indicators, rear undertray/ mudguard and rear reflector, together with the distinctive red rider's seat.
The motorcycle has covered 25, 819 miles and has recently been MOT tested. It starts, runs and rides as it should and presents extremely well for a motorcycle now approaching 30 years old.
As the photographs show, the bodywork, tank, frame, wheels and general finish are all in very good condition.

The motorcycle also comes with a very nice collection of original equipment and historical documentation, including:

• Numerous old MOT certificates
• Collection of old tax discs
• Recently issued MOT
The original service book is unfortunately no longer with the motorcycle, which I mention for complete transparency.
The collection of previous MOT certificates and tax discs provides some useful history for the motorcycle and complements what is becoming an increasingly difficult specification of early R1 to find.
This isn't simply an early R1 that has been heavily modified and made to look standard again. It retains many of the original factory details that were routinely removed from these motorcycles when they were newer.
The 1998 4XV represents the very beginning of the Yamaha R1 story and good, unmolested examples in the original red and white colour scheme are becoming increasingly sought after by enthusiasts and collectors.
I'm currently reducing the size of my private motorcycle collection, which is the only reason the bike is being offered for sale.
This would suit somebody looking for an original, usable first-generation R1 to enjoy while owning a motorcycle that I believe has all the ingredients of a genuine future classic.
