Description

The Lincoln Continental was imported from the USA in 2013 in a condition requiring a comprehensive restoration. However, the car was never subjected to a superficial “refresh.” The goal was to restore both its proper appearance and full mechanical functionality, so that it could be driven and enjoyed as a proper road-going classic without compromises.

The bodywork was addressed first, approximately 10 years ago. All areas affected by corrosion were either repaired or replaced. The entire body, including the door jambs and inner areas, was then repainted in its original Nordic White colour.

The suspension, steering system and drivetrain were also extensively refurbished. Ball joints and shock absorbers were replaced, while the engine, transmission, power steering pump and steering column were resealed. Rubber components, including the engine mounts, transmission mounts and steering column mounts, were also replaced. The braking system received new brake calipers and brake lines.

A great deal of attention was also paid to the electrical system. The wiring and electrical components were restored, and the various factory features were brought back to proper working order. These include the original power windows, air conditioning, factory radio, interior lighting, power antenna and all electrical components associated with the convertible roof mechanism. The heater core was also replaced, together with all seals around the roof, doors and trunk lids.

The entire convertible roof mechanism was refurbished, including the relays, switches and limit switches responsible for its correct operation. The roof also received a new soft top.

The interior was refreshed with new carpeting, leather upholstery on the seats and new trunk upholstery.

The chrome bumpers were also restored, giving the Continental back its distinctive shine and character.

This is not a restoration carried out “the American way,” where the only requirement is for the car to look good from five metres away.

With this car, attention was also paid to everything that cannot be seen in the first photograph. Everything that should work was checked and restored to proper operating condition. The electrical system, convertible roof, windows, heating, lighting, radio, suspension, steering and braking systems are all functional. Unfortunately, the cigarette lighters located in the doors were the one feature that could not be restored to their original working condition.

Only 3, 180 Continental Convertibles were produced in 1966, making this car not only an impressive classic today, but also an interesting and increasingly rare collector’s automobile.
