Description
1971 Volkswagen Bay Window Dormobile Campervan – £15, 995 ono
Registration: STP 146J | Part exchange considered for a VW Beetle
For sale, reluctantly due to ill health, is my 1971 Volkswagen Bay Window Dormobile campervan, registration STP 146J, finished in white and yellow. First registered on 16 June 1971, this classic right-hand-drive Volkswagen has the iconic Bay Window design and distinctive Dormobile conversion. The independent specialist valuation report records a 1, 584cc petrol engine and documents the vehicle’s history and features.
The camper retains its traditional Dormobile interior, including the period dashboard and steering wheel, fitted furniture, sink, cool box and useful storage cupboards. There is a drop-down buddy seat behind the front passenger seat, along with a two-seater rear bench that converts into a bed. The interior floor has laminate covering, and the rear storage unit provides space for the original table.
One of the highlights is the distinctive elevating Dormobile roof, which features two opening ventilation windows and two fixed windows, allowing plenty of natural light into the interior. The specialist valuer recorded that the roof was in good order and reported that the tyres and exhaust appeared to be in very good condition at the time of inspection. The report also describes the interior furniture as functional and notes that the van had been used for camping.
The vehicle’s history was researched by the independent valuer using DVLA MOT records and vehicle history checks. The report records the most recent MOT mileage as 49, 651 miles in April 2024 and notes that the vehicle is MOT-exempt, although annual independent inspections were recommended. The report also records previous mechanical work, including a £2, 000 engine-related invoice covering items such as a starter motor, battery, carburettor, distributor, ignition coil, oil cooler, clutch and other components.
The camper has been stored in a secure, dry warehouse for the last three years. It currently requires two batteries. As with any classic vehicle that has been stored for an extended period, prospective buyers should make their own checks regarding its present condition and any work required. An independent valuation was prepared by John Glynn of Specialist Car Valuations Limited in November 2024 specifically for divorce financial proceedings. The report includes a detailed inspection, vehicle history, condition observations and market comparisons, and a copy is available on request.
Asking price: £15, 995 ono. I am open to sensible offers and would also be willing to consider a part exchange for a Volkswagen Beetle, depending on the vehicle offered. This is a genuine and reluctant sale purely because of ill health, and I would like to find a new owner who will appreciate this classic Dormobile and give it the attention it deserves. Please get in touch for further information, photographs, a copy of the valuation report or to discuss a viewing.
