Description

1987 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL R107
A truly exceptional and increasingly rare opportunity to acquire what is believed to be one of the lowest-mileage Mercedes-Benz 300 SL R107 models currently available, and potentially one of the lowest-mileage examples in existence.

This beautiful 1987 300 SL remains remarkably original and completely unmolested, retaining its factory specification throughout. One of its most impressive attributes is that it retains 100% of its original factory paintwork. It has never been repainted, has never undergone bodywork repairs and has remained in exceptionally well-preserved condition throughout its life.

The car has been dry-stored from new and has had effectively just two keepers in real terms. The current family acquired the vehicle when it was approximately three to four years old, around 1991, when it had covered just 4, 500 miles. It has remained within the same family ever since.

The V5 registration document records three owners, although the second and third registered keepers are father and son. The car has effectively remained within the same family ownership since 1991 and has predominantly been kept as a cherished collector’s car and family keepsake.

Due to its exceptionally low usage over the years, the service history is understandably somewhat sporadic. The car was largely kept off the road, with the engine periodically started and the vehicle maintained by the owner himself rather than being driven regularly.

Consequently, the emphasis throughout its life has been on preservation rather than accumulating mileage.

Prior to offering the car for sale, we commissioned a comprehensive mechanical inspection and extensive recommissioning by the renowned Mercedes-Benz specialists Hilton & Moss.
All identified advisories from the inspection report have been addressed, with approximately £7, 000 spent on maintenance and preventative work.

Importantly, this expenditure was not the result of major mechanical faults or failures. Instead, the work was undertaken to ensure that the car is properly preserved and mechanically prepared for continued enjoyment by its new owner.

As is common with a vehicle of this age that has spent much of its life standing, a number of age-related rubber components, bushes, seals and other serviceable items had deteriorated over time rather than through use. These have been systematically replaced as part of the recommissioning process. Four new tyres have also been fitted due to their age.
The work is extensively documented, providing a comprehensive record of the recent expenditure and inspection.

Both the factory hardtop and soft top are presented in exceptional, virtually immaculate condition.
The soft top, in particular, appears to have barely, if ever, seen daylight, such is its condition. Its exceptional preservation can be clearly appreciated in the accompanying photographs. The hood mechanism operates correctly, with the various adjustable sections functioning as they should, while the hardtop fits and aligns correctly.

The interior of the car is equally impressive. The original leather interior remains in pristine condition throughout, with the materials, trim and fittings displaying the remarkably low level of wear one would expect from a genuine 15, 000-mile example.
The leather is completely original, with virtually no discernible signs of wear. The dashboard, door cards, centre console and interior trim are exceptionally well preserved. The switches and buttons remain crisp and unfaded, while the surrounding trim is free from the damage, marking and deterioration often seen in R107 models of this age.

The interior genuinely reflects the car’s exceptionally low mileage and careful storage throughout its life, rather than having been cosmetically restored to achieve a similar appearance.

The result is an exceptionally original R107 that combines ultra-low mileage, remarkable originality, long-term family ownership, original factory paintwork and an outstanding overall condition.

All of the car’s features and equipment operate as expected, and the vehicle presents as an exceptionally well-preserved example of the Mercedes-Benz R107 SL.

For the serious collector, finding an R107 with this combination of mileage, originality, factory paintwork, provenance and preservation is becoming extraordinarily difficult.

An exceptionally rare opportunity to acquire a genuine time-capsule Mercedes-Benz 300 SL.
