History The 348 was one of the most eagerly awaited models in Ferrari's recent history. While the tubular-chassis Dino, 308 and 328 were evolutions of each other, the 348, with its pressed steel monocoque, was the first entirely new Ferrari junior since 1968. Aesthetically, the 348 resembled a smaller, better proportioned and more curvaceous iteration of Pininfarina's iconic Testarossa. Such was the demand that buyers queued en masse to get their hands on the latest little Ferrari. When the 348 was launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1989, the market for top-of-the-range cars was booming. Faced with improved alternatives, Ferrari offered a redesigned 348 from 1993. The marque's first two-seater convertible arrived first in 20 years: the 348 Spider. Launched in February 1993, the 348 Spider inaugurated a number of upgrades that were later adopted on the existing Berlinetta and Targa variants, renamed the GTB and GTS respectively. In the engine bay was the latest Tipo F119 H version of the original 3. 4-litre V8. It had a higher compression ratio (from 10. 4:1 to 10. 8:1), a larger air intake plenum, new valve springs and new timing belts. Its exhaust system was also more efficient. The Tipo F119 H engine developed a maximum power output of 320 bhp at 7, 200 rpm, compared with 300 bhp at 7, 200 rpm for the previous engine. The same 238 lb-ft of torque was produced, albeit slightly higher up the rev range (now at 5, 000 rpm instead of 4, 200 rpm). Otherwise, the all-alloy 90° DOHC V8 with its four valve heads, Nikasil-lined cylinder liners and dry-sump lubrication remained unchanged. Its displacement was 3, 405 cm3 thanks to a bore and stroke of 85 mm and 75 mm respectively. The improved Bosch Motronic 2. 7 engine management introduced midway through production of the original 348 was retained. Another update to the latest 348s was a higher fifth gear. As before, transmission was via a transversely mounted five-speed gearbox, twin disc clutch and limited slip differential.
