COX GTM First registration 1967 SU carburettor fired 849cc 4 cylinder engine 4 speed gearbox 10 inch Cosmic rims Hydraulic drum brakes front and rear Custom Cage 6 point roll bar New breeze part present with vehicle This is one of the rare first COX GTM built, the 7th in 1967, chassis no. 007/ 67 The GTM marque was launched in 1967 when Cheshire garage owner Bernard Cox and his friend Jack Hosker created the Cox GTM (Grand Touring Mini).
The Cox GTM design consisted of two Mini front subframes joined by a sheet steel semi-monocoque chassis. The car was mid-engined, the rear subframe contained the engine as in a Mini with the steering arms locked in position with adjustable rods and ball joints. The front subframe supported the steering rack, fuel tank and radiator. The suspension, brakes and 10-inch wheels were identical to those on the Mini, and the fibreglass bodywork contained more than a hint of Ferrari Dino in its styling. The unveiling of the Cox GTM at the Racing Car Show in January 1967 generated a great deal of interest and a small group of employees began assembling kits as quickly as possible in Bernard Cox's Hazel Grove garage.
Despite strong demand for the car, production problems limited output to around one kit a fortnight, disrupting the day-to-day operations of Cox's garage and in the autumn of 1968 Bernard Cox decided to cease production.
It is estimated that just over fifty kits were produced by the Cox garage before the project was taken over by the young Howard Heerey, who renamed the model the GTM and made changes to the chassis and body design to improve production, which means that the pre-1968 models are truly atypical and rare.
