In 1986, Maserati finally deployed electronic injection on its V6 Biturbo engines. A welcome move, as the engine operation becomes smoother and more consistent. No more flat spots on acceleration, difficult hot starts, or chaotic idling. Only the mechanical sound and character are less pronounced, but everything is relative.
In quick succession, Maserati unveiled the Biturbo Si, based on the Biturbo II, reviving the idea of the previous S/ ES but with electronic fuel injection and power raised to 220 hp.
Inside, the seats are redesigned to offer better support.
The NACA air intakes change function and deliver cool air directly into the engine bay to cool it.
Proof of the formula’s success: 992 Maserati Biturbo Si were produced from 1986 to 1988.
