Designed by Ercole Spada at Carrozzeria Zagato, this compact coupé combined aerodynamic efficiency with lightweight construction on a shortened Spider 1300 Junior platform and 105-series Giulia mechanicals.
The distinctive bodywork featured steel panels rather than Zagato’s usual aluminium construction, while remaining lighter than standard production models. Its well-cut Kamm tail and sleek profile gave the Junior Z an instantly recognizable road presence.
The 1, 290 cc twin-cam inline four produced around 103 horsepower at 6, 000 rpm, thanks to two Weber 40 DCOE carburettors, paired with a five-speed manual gearbox. This setup offered lively performance with a top speed of around 109 mph, making it remarkably quick for its time.
Introduced in 1969 and officially launched in 1970, the 1300 Junior Z saw production of about 1, 108 units through to the end of 1972. Alfa Romeo built enough examples to obtain FIA Appendix J Group 3 homologation, though the company never intended it for competition.
