A car for the enthusiast with exemplary maintenance! History Considered one of the most usable classic Ferraris thanks to its durability, respect for the history and its classic aesthetics, the Ferrari 328 first appeared in 1985, succeeding the Ferrari 308, which had held the title of Ferrari’s best-selling car in ten years of production. The Ferrari 328 GTS (Gran Turismo Spider) is a targa-roof variant of the Ferrari 328 GTB (Gran Turismo Berlinetta). Both cars use the third-generation Dino V8 Ferrari engine, which Enzo Ferrari strongly opposed when the Italian manufacturer began selling cars, his aim being to produce cars equipped with V12 engines. The Ferrari 308 had no significant evolution before the end of its production, when Ferrari introduced a four-valve-per-cylinder engine on the Ferrari 308 GTS Quattrovalvole in 1982. This engine was carried over to the Ferrari 328 GTS and GTB, but with displacement increased to 3. 2 litres, among other improvements allowing it to develop more power than the 308. Consequently, the 328 was a much more performance-focused car during its production and is today a favourite with enthusiasts. However, die-hard fans of Tom Selleck would choose the 308 GTS Quattrovalvole without hesitation. The Ferrari 328 GTS enjoys greater popularity today, mainly thanks to its targa roof, which explains why Ferrari produced and sold more examples than the 328 GTB. The Ferrari 328 GTS was launched at the same time as the Ferrari 328 GTB to replace the Ferrari 308 GTS, which heavily influenced the 328 GTS. Despite the power increase of the Ferrari 308 GTS Quattrovalvole, customers always asked for more. Facing competition, Ferrari knew the 328 GTS had to stand out. This translated into increased power, more aerodynamic bodywork and a modernised interior design, offering improved comfort and controls. In addition, the 328 GTS features a better finish with body-colour bumpers and a bolder style, staying true to the trends of its era. The performance, interior and exterior improvements are among the factors that made the 328 GTS a generally more capable car, despite its reduced rigidity due to its targa roof. In the 1980s, car manufacturers, Ferrari included, did not take into account rigidity or the loss of structural integrity when designing convertibles. Consequently, convertibles, namely the Ferrari 308 GTS, lost some handling characteristics compared with their coupe counterparts. During the four years of production of the Ferrari 328 GTS, from 1985 to 1989, Ferrari built 6, 068 units before stopping production and replacing it with the 348 GTS in 1989. The production numbers of the Ferrari 328 GTS were more than five times higher than those of the Ferrari 328 GTB, as Ferrari built only 1, 344 328 GTBs during the same period as the 328 GTS. Yet both cars were produced at Ferrari’s Maranello factory in Italy. The Ferrari 328 GTS is equipped with a 3. 2-litre DOHC V8 engine, derived from the 3. 0-litre DOHC V8 of the Ferrari 308 GTS Quattrovalvole, but with power raised to 270 horsepower. The increased displacement is the main factor behind this power rise. Ferrari also used a new Italian electronic ignition system manufactured by Marelli, which improved timing and energy delivery of the spark compared with the old ignition system, thereby increasing power. Like the Ferrari 308 and most Ferraris before it, the Ferrari 328 GTS is rear-wheel drive, with power from the engine routed to the wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox. The engine, transmission and lighter bodywork of the Ferrari 328 GTS enable it to accelerate from rest to 96 km/ h in about 5 seconds, delivering the performance customers sought. The top speed is limited to 265 km/ h, an impressive figure for a mid-range supercar of the 1980s. During the 1988 update, Ferrari installed the first ABS on the Ferrari...
