In the 1930s, Delage embodied the excellence of French automobile making. Its inline six of 3, 045 cm³ delivered power and refinement with unmatched smoothness. Its chassis, designed for endurance and comfort, illustrated all the French know-how in grand touring. In a period of crisis, Delage kept its rank thanks to its exceptional quality and its image as living art on four wheels, admired by aristocracy and celebrities.
The history of this example is equally remarkable. Ordered new in 1930 by an Indian Maharaja, in saloon version with two spare wheels, luggage rack and protective plaque, this Delage travelled early to the four corners of the world. In 1933, it arrived in England and spent more than twenty years in Yorkshire. In the 1960s, it joined the Vintage & Sports Car Club register, then fell quiet from 1968. In 2005, it was reborn thanks to a professional transformation into a four-seat tourer, in Chapron spirit, enhanced with 21-inch wheels to better take on endurance rallies.
A legend forged at the Pekin–Paris Rally
More than a beautiful object, this Delage is a veteran of the world’s most demanding rally: the Pekin–Paris. It has taken part there three times—in 2007, 2010 and 2013—facing the Great Wall, the Mongolian steppes, the Siberian rivers, to the triumphant finish at Place de la Concorde. Prepared by VBE Restorations, it earned a silver medal in 2010, and in 2013 it restarted the départ under Belgian colours with Marreyt Classic Cars.
Ready for the next edition
The next Pekin–Paris is planned for 2028, but the adventure starts today. Three precious years to prepare: learning navigation, endurance work, strengthening the bonds between teammates, taking part in rallies such as the Flying Scotsman or the Three Legs of Mann organised by HERO-ERA. The waiting then becomes part of the dream.
