Description
A subtle icon, underestimated for far too long
Presented in 1955 as a more affordable alternative to the legendary 300 SL, the Mercedes-Benz 190 SL quickly established itself as a proposition in its own right. Often described as the 'little brother' to the 300 SL, it shares its spirit, the purity of its lines and timeless elegance, while offering a softer, more civilised approach to sporting driving, but no less seductive.
Where some enthusiasts lament the absence of the Gullwing’s characteristic round headlamps, the 190 SL asserts its own identity: an open, harmonious roadster, perfectly proportioned, whose silhouette seems drawn to traverse decades without shedding an ounce of charm. Hard not to succumb to this aesthetically precise design.
Sport-Leicht or Super-Leicht?
When Mercedes introduces the designation 'SL', the exact origin of the abbreviation remains deliberately ambiguous. 'Sport Leicht' or 'Super Leicht' — why choose, when both notions apply so evidently to this model?
The 190 SL stands out for its remarkable ease of handling, eager mechanics and versatility that make it an ideal road companion, as enjoyable on a sightseeing run as in more engaged driving.
A carefully restored example
The car we present today was originally delivered to the American market, where the 190 SL enjoyed considerable success. Imported into Belgium about ten years ago, it benefited from a full restoration carried out between 2016 and 2020.
The car today presents in a rare, elegant combination: Graphite Grey over red leather, topped with a red mohair hood. Although not matching its original configuration, this chromatic pairing gives it an exceptional visual presence, almost irresistible.
During the restoration, Solex carburettors were replaced with Weber units, sportier and more reliable, significantly improving the engine response.
Since completion of the work, the car has covered only around 1, 200 km, a testament to measured and respectful use.
A lively, precise and surprisingly modern roadster
This 190 SL stands out for its particularly sharp handling. Agile, balanced, comfortable and well protected from the elements, it offers a driving experience that reminds you how this model deserves to be regarded for what it truly is: a sporty, refined, reliable and deeply endearing roadster.
A car that makes you want to anticipate summer, imagine sun-soaked roads and open-air excursions.
The year 2026 can wait — this 190 SL, for its part, is ready right now.
