When it comes to American muscle cars there are certain stand out tracks. You know what we mean. Like the songs on your favourite playlist that you never skip, or those classic movies that you never tire of watching. There’s the Ford Mustang, for instance, and the Dodge Charger. The Plymouth Barracuda and the Chevrolet Camaro. And then there’s this: The Pontiac GTO. One of the forefathers of the whole muscle car movement and arguably the one that started it all.

Making its debut in 1964 the GTO (Gran Turismo Omologato) was the brainchild of John DeLorean. Yes, that DeLorean. At the time General Motors had put the kibosh on factory-sponsored racing thanks in part to the Kennedy administrations investigations into anti-trust law violations (but that’s for another article). This led GM to re-focus their efforts from the track to the street and so John DeLorean and his small team of engineers set to work shoe-horning the 389 cubic-inch (that’s a whopping 6.4-litres to you and I) V8 from the Bonneville into the much smaller Tempest. As it turned out the engine fitted like a glove and the GTO was born, kick-starting an entire trend.

Starting life as an option package for the Tempest the GTO became its own entity in 1966 and remained in production until ’74. It came to represent everything people loved about the muscle car; sleek looks, impressive performance and an affordable price tag. Over the course of its production run the GTO went through four generations in total but it was the second gen model that underwent the most changes, at least from a stylistic perspective. Gone were the boxy lines of the original car, supplanted by a much more streamlined aesthetic and this is the shape that we at least most associate with the name.

That probably explains why we’re drawn to this particular 1969 Pontiac GTO then for our Classified of the Week. Not only that but this is the ‘Judge’ model. Perhaps the most GTO of all the GTOs ever produced the Judge was an option package from ’69 to ’71 and was GM’s attempt to counteract falling sales figures. Extras included a rear spoiler, stripes and “The Judge” decals, as well as the choice of two pretty impressive engines: the 366hp Ram Air III and the 370hp Ram Air IV. A convertible was also offered but these are incredibly rare as only a handful were ever made.

According to the advert the car is a genuine ’69 GTO Judge as indicated by the chassis number and features the 6.6-litre Ram Air III engine producing 366bhp. Judging (no pun intended) by the pictures the original Carousel Red paintwork appears to be in excellent condition and although more orange than actual red it still presents incredibly well. It remains the most sought-after colour and all of the famous Judge decals are present and correct. The five-spoke chrome wheels really set the car off and it really is a thing of beauty.

The engine bay has been similarly well-preserved and that huge V8 looks exceptionally clean, resplendent with its shiny Edelbrock rocker covers and air cleaner. Even the underside of the bonnet, with those prominent scoops is in great shape. Or should we say hood? All in all it looks to be an exceptionally clean example and a quick look online reveals a recent MOT pass in May with zero advisories. We can also see that the car has covered just over 72,000 miles but whether that’s accurate or the figure in kms is anyone’s guess. Either way it’s not a particularly high number.

The Pontiac GTO Judge is top tier muscle from that most glorious era of huge displacement V8s and traffic light drag racing. Unapologetically brutish the GTO, or GOAT as it was popularly known, really was the granddaddy of the muscle car set. Whether due to its innate ability to eat anything on the street, its capacity to burn gas, oil and tyres or the fact that it really is the greatest of all time, the GTO will forever be revered and respected and this particular Judge can still most definitely pass a verdict on what it means to be a muscle car.
