Laser Spanner Extension – Product Review

We all love working on our classic cars, right? It strengthens that bond between man and machine, we get to sit back knowing the work has been done properly, plus by doing the work ourselves, we’ve saved a couple of quid too. Result. Until, that is, your work is halted by the ‘ten second, ten hour’ nut or bolt. We’ve all been there. We’ve all had that one fixing that will just not budge, no matter what we try. Sometimes luck is on our side, and we can get a rattle gun on said fixing. The rest of the time, however, we’re often presented with a sliver of space in which we can just about get a spanner. And then comes the issue of needing enough torque to turn said spanner. That, thankfully, is where this Laser Spanner Extension comes into play.

We’ve all done the ‘hook a ring and open-ended spanner’ together trick to get a bit more torque on our side. The problem is, that method usually results in slippage and accidentally punching things you shouldn’t punch, like a chassis rail, or a brake drum, or your own face. This Laser product promises to not do that. But does it actually work? Well, we bought one to find out.

The Product

Look, there’s no getting around it. The Laser 6745 is a metal bar. However, it has a grabby, sculpted bit at one end which serve two purposes. Firstly, it makes an excellent back scratcher. Secondly, and the reason you’re really buying it, it fits around and ‘holds’ a spanner in a more secure way than that old ‘spanner on spanner’ method. You simply hook this onto your spanner, and hey presto, you get more leverage. 393mm more to be exact, and that makes a difference.

The Test

We didn’t really have anything stubborn on which to test this, so what we did instead was find bolts that were in pairs, then try one with the spanner, and the other with the spanner and the Laser extension. Not exactly laboratory conditions, but good enough for who it’s for. And we have to say, it made a real difference. The bar holds the spanner well and you don’t fear you’re going to slip. You also feel a nice level of connection, which is important as you don’t want to end up shearing things off. This feels like a proper extension to the spanner, not a weak workaround. And for £23, you can’t really argue. It does exactly what it says on the tin, by which we mean box.

The Result

This isn’t cutting edge rocket science, it’s a bit of metal with a sculpted end that grabs a spanner for you. It all honesty, we would be more surprised if it didn’t work – it’s not hard to get right. It’s a nice bit of kit, sits well in hand, seems very strong, it’s good at scratching your back, and will no doubt always be a useful get out of trouble free sort of device. And it was just over £20. That’s a bargain, and means it’s well worth having.

The Verdict – 5 out of 5

Does what it promises, doesn’t cost the earth, seems to be well made. What’s not to like? It won’t work in every situation, but it’s so cheap that it would be daft not to have it, because when you can use it, you will be so, so glad you bought it.
