Sealey Tool Trolley – Product Review

Chris Pollitt

A surgeon doesn’t walk into the operating theatre without his favourite scalpels, an artist doesn’t settle down to paint a masterpiece without his brushes and paints, and nor should you settle into a session of satisfying car tinkering without your chosen tools. And yes, you’re probably reading this thinking “but I have a tool box” and indeed you do. But the tool box is all the way over there, and you’re over here, holding a suspension part in place while you wonder where your ratchet is. And that’s no good. No, you need your tools there, beside you, ready to go. You need a tool trolley.

Get your Sealey Tool Trolley here

We like a tool trolley here at Car & Classic. Yes, you have the tool box, but a tool trolley is handy, and it can be a great way to set up for the work you need to do. Get the right selection of tools, the right clips, fixings, rags, fluids – whatever you need, just have it on hand, right there. You have it by your side, you keep everything tidy, and of course you’re not bending over looking for tools, nor should you lose any due to always having somewhere to put them. A tool trolley is the way forward.

The Product

Choosing a tool trolley is a strangely overwhelming process. There are so, so many. Go on ‘that’ online site, and you’ll be inundated with cheap options. Some for as little as £30, but that’s too cheap. It’ll be made from metal so thin it makes Bacofoil look well’ard and the wheels will almost certainly fall off. No, you want something a bit more durable, you want a tool trolley that will last. Hence us going for the unapologetically green Superline Pro AP760MHV tool trolley from UK tool manufacturer, Sealey. Some were hugely overkill, but this one, with its two locking drawers, a clamshell top with, again, locking function and even gas struts to aid in lifting, was the one we fancied. The closing top appealed greatly, as that basically makes it a rolling workbench of sorts, so long as you protect that green paint, of course.

The Test

A tool trolley isn’t something you can really put through a series of tests. We could push it into traffic, or down the stairs, but to what end? Instead, it’s a case of judging how solid and useful it is when assembled. And yes, you have to assemble it. It’s simple enough if a screwdriver and set of spanners aren’t alien to you, but the instructions are basic to say the least. However, we ha it together in less than an hour and were pleased with it. Lots of fixings go into this tool trolley, and as such, it feels solid. It’s also incredibly well equipped. You have two lower shelves, two locking drawers (deep and shallow, and both with foam liners). Then there is the top box, which is incredibly spacious. There’s a handle at one end for pushing the trolley about, while the other side boasts a rack for your screwdrivers. Both ends have shelves for bottles/fluids/tools or whatever you like. It’s a seriously well made bit of kit.

The Result

We’ve not had this tool trolley long, and we’re already wondering how we ever managed without one. This model seems to be the perfect middle ground. We like the locking functions (we’re in a shared unit), we like the wheels with locking brakes, and we love the fact this trolley is big enough to be properly useful. You’ll get a lot of kit and on this. This really is like having a very green, very quiet assistant. It stands at 900mm tall, and so is always at arm’s reach. You’ll be so, so glad of it.

The Verdict – 4 out of 5

At £287.94 (inc VAT) it’s not the cheapest, but it’s also not trying to be. This is something you will have in your garage forever, unless you push into traffic or down the stairs. It’s solid, it’s incredibly sturdy, the fit and finish is deeply impressive and did we mention it’s so green it can be seen from space? You’ll never lose it. We like the locking function, especially the top section, but this might be overkill for the home mechanic, and again, it’s not cheap, but that doesn’t make it any less excellent. Plus, Sealey is a UK brand with a great reputation and great customer care. You don’t get that after spending £30 on evilbay.
