1933 Delage DS Coach Cabriolet

Highlights

  • Very rare body style
  • Previously owned by Louis Blériot
  • Fully restored model presents wonderfully

The Appeal

Despite the onset of financial struggles of the 1930’s and the Great Depression, Delage seemingly
thrived in the period producing some of the most luxurious automobiles around. This particular DS
featuring styling by Letourneur et Marchand includes a unique Belle Mère rear folding seat solution
turning the exclusiveness up to 11.

Reportedly previously owned by French aviator, Louis Blériot, this car holds an important place in
French history.

Having been fully restored and only just recently gone through an extensive mechanical overhaul,
this is a pre-war vehicle that presents as if it were brand new according to the vendor. In a beautiful
specification and running well, it is surely the perfect opportunity for any collector looking for a
stunning French pre-war automobile.

History and Paperwork

  • First manufactured in 1933
  • Previously owned by famous French aviator, Louis Blériot
  • Fully restored
  • Purchased by current owner in 2021
  • Classic car registration
  • Several documents from the car’s history
  • Photos of the restoration
  • FFVE certificate
  • Proof of sale

The Interior

  • Stylish interior design
  • Excellent condition upholstery throughout
  • Rare folding seats behind cabin

From beneath the soft top hood, this Delage’s interior stretches out to the exterior thanks to a very
rare addition. Thanks to the unique Letourneur et Marchand body style, the car features a foldable
bench seat to the rear of the chassis, dubbed Belle Mère seating.

The leather upholstery on this additional row of seats presents in wonderful condition, as does the
trim throughout the interior. Burgundy red leather adorns much of the interior and shows little more
than a scuff mark. Matching carpets and door cards make for a brilliant specification whilst wood
details on the dashboard and steering wheel are wonderful.

An informative instrument cluster sits in the middle of the dashboard. The car also features winding
windows and lovely soft top roof, both of which go up and down without issue. Indeed, we have no
reason to believe that anything is malfunctioning in this car, all presenting in great shape.

The Exterior

  • Unique body styling
  • Proud Delage presence
  • Lovely exterior condition

From the outside, this car is just as regal as the interior. The vendor describes the car as being very
classy, no doubt thanks to its powerful front end and stunning paint job. Furthermore, featuring
Letourneur et Marchand styling as previously stated, this 1933 model is a unique car.

From the large grille and front bumper flow a selection of stunning lines, all meeting up at the
elongated tail of the car. Swooping wings add to the sense of occasion that is simply looking at this
historic automobile whilst the whole thing is finished in a gorgeous coat of burgundy red with cream.
These flowing lines are well contrasted by the hood in its raised position, that makes for a more
traditional boxy look.

The paint work looks to be in fantastic condition having been resprayed during a full restoration. That
pairs nicely with chrome details dotted throughout the car including the aforementioned tall grille as
well as the front and rear bumpers. They too are in very good shape, shining nicely.

The wire wheels present very well with no apparent damage. They are fitted with a matching set of
Dunlop tyres that the owner states are recently new.

Underneath, there may be some small signs of patina, noticeably on the leaf springs. However, one
will certainly struggle to spot any major corrosion on this wonderfully kept classic Delage.

The Mechanics

  • 2.6-litre straight six
  • No work needed for next owner
  • Some recent work done

Under the impressively long bonnet of this 1933 Delage DS is a 2.6-litre straight-six providing enough
power to dub this model the sports car of the Delage range at the time. Paired to a four-speed
manual transmission, it is sure to be an involving driving experience.

Following a full restoration some time ago, the car has been very well cared for since it seems. The
car is said to run smoothly and start easily. In fact, the vendor points out that the new owner needn’t
worry about possible reparations or parts to replace, with all mechanical elements reportedly in tip-
top condition.

Some recent servicing has been done. A full engine and gearbox service took place recently alongside
a full check up of the fuel tank. The coolant was also purged and replaced. The whole engine was
seemingly overhauled with carburettor and valve timing adjustments as well as new spark plugs.

Summary

A charismatic car according to the vendor, this is a unique model both for its styling and its previous
owner, Louis Blériot. In recent times, the car has been fully restored and more recently, mechanically
overhauled.

With a wonderful paint job, the car looks great and shows a brilliant condition, showing just how well
it has been taken care of. A seemingly unique opportunity to own such a car, this is the perfect model
for any French pre-war collector.
