  • Rare Canterbury Pitt conversion
  • Older restoration in well preserved condition

  • 1600cc engine and recent gearbox and axle
  • Just four owners from new

The Appeal

Volkswagen may have planned the Type 2 as a strictly utilitarian – and thoroughly modern – commercial, but buyers quickly twigged it worked equally well as a getaway camper.
An army of companies grew up to apply clever, space-utilising layouts incorporating everything the holidaying family could need. One of the less well known was Canterbury Pitt, run by Peter Pitt, which offered a range of conversions and pop-up roofs for Type 2s.
This original UK market RHD Type 2 T1c benefits from Pitt’s ingenious, high quality conversion and appears to retain many of the original features. Restored between 2006 and 2011 it remains in very good condition, as verified by a long, advisory-free MOT. Smartly finished in two tone white and brown it comes with a vast history file attesting to the care of its four owners.

History and Paperwork

  • First UK registered on 14th August 1964
  • Just four owners from new with current owner since 19th November 2009
  • Thick history file, some of which is shown in the photographs
  • This includes spreadsheets and hand written notes documenting expenditure
  • The notes include record of comprehensive restoration dated July 2006
  • There also appears to be a CD of photographs recording the restoration
  • Additional work recorded in what appears to be 2011 to 2012 expending over £6,000
  • Old tax discs and MOTs included
  • Old service book showing various service stamps from late 1960s to 1970s
  • These show an indicated 50,000 miles in the mid 70s
  • As the MOT records show around 55,000 miles in 2005 it is possible the odo has been round
  • Letter from Volkswagen Commercial confirming build date of 16th June 1964
  • Engine, gearbox and rear axle replaced during vendor’s tenure

The Condition

  • Standard two-tone single door van in good order reflecting older restoration
  • The only variation from standard outside appears to be that it is lowered
  • Sits on smart domed, chromed hub caps
  • Bodywork in good condition with no visible corrosion or deterioration
  • A small number of light bodywork marks such as scuff on bumper as shown in photos
  • There are some signs of use inside shown in photographs
  • These include marks to door cards, damage to rubber sill trims and sagging headlining
  • But none detract from what is a well presented and smart looking cabin
  • The Canterbury Pitt layout is in good order and condition with fitted utilities
  • Light grey seat trim, cabin trim and wooden storage units in good, well kept order
  • Some of the oft-used wooden surfaces show light signs of varnish wear
  • Front cabin in good order with only lights signs of use
  • Some rust visible to one of the windscreen pop-out frames
  • VDO dials and period-style Realistic radio with Kenwood amplifier attached
  • Some stains visible to rear storage area but likely an easy repair
  • Underside in good order with no structural issues to note on last MOT
This smart UK RHD van is a T1c with the larger rear door and single side door. An older restoration in a fetching colour scheme it remains in very good condition thanks to the considerable efforts of its long term owner who has looked after it with care.
The innovative Canterbury Pitt interior is in good condition, showing only very light use none of which are unsightly.

The Mechanics

  • Replacement 1600cc air cooled flat four Volkswagen engine
  • Rebuilt gearbox which we understand to be a Freeway Flyer version with higher final drive
  • This improves top speed and high speed cruising
  • Rear axle replaced with new unit to work with the replacement gearbox
  • Extensive maintenance history carefully documented in photographs
The extensive maintenance records for this lovely van include a replacement 1600cc air cooled engine and gearbox. Both of these reflect the vendor’s knowledge with these vehicles and lean into its usability over longer distances and higher speeds. The more powerful engine and what we understand to be a Freeway Flyer gearbox enable more relaxed motorway cruising and higher top speed. The axle has been replaced to match the gearbox.
