The Appeal

A strong contender for the most stylish car of its era and the cornerstone of all subsequent SL variants, the W113 ‘Pagoda’ is still a favourite among collectors. These cars are utterly beautiful from every angle and superbly engineered under the skin so we’re delighted to offer this rare UK-supplied 230 SL from 1965.
As if finding a British market right-hand drive example wasn't special enough, this 230 comes with an expansive history file dating back to when the car was supplied more than fifty years ago. Even better still, it’s in fabulous condition throughout, benefitting from substantial bodywork restoration was in 2011 and around £27,000 in mechanical expenditure during the last year alone.
For those seeking an exemplary W113 SL, this one’s eminently worthy of your consideration.

The History and Paperwork

  • Dealer code 537 which matches Great Britain delivery
  • The service history is extensive, and the vendor reports that this includes every MOT since new and records of known owners, with copies of Main Agent Service invoices
  • The data card is the original factory-printed card, not a photocopy
  • Exempt from road tax and MOT testing
  • Three former registered keepers recorded
  • 88,803 miles indicated
  • The bodywork restoration was commissioned by a well-known Mercedes-Benz Club member, all these works are documented with invoices totalling over £15,000 in period, together with a CD of images in the history file
  • Around  £27,000 has been spent maintaining the mechanicals over the last year
Other items in the substantial history file include:
  • • Maintenance records and invoices for previous body and paint work
  • • Original service books
  • • Original handbook, tyre installation instructions and spare parts book
  • • Mercedes-Benz European map and original marketing brochure
  • • Historic tax discs
  • • Interesting historical ephemera including a nostalgic motor fuel ration book

The Condition

  • In 2011 substantial bodywork renovation was undertaken, including replacement and or repairs
  • Repainting was then carried out as required
  • All work was carried out to very good standard and has held up well
  • The Tunis Beige metallic factory original paintwork as detailed in the data card code 462 for both the bodywork and hard top are in fine order, matching the original factory painted dash
  • While there were several shades of Gold available in period, this is the most popular, lightest option
  • The Black mohair folding soft top is reportedly in fine condition and the vendor demonstrates that it stows away neatly behind the cabin
  • The black interior trim provides a welcome contrast to the exterior scheme and has accrued a gentle patina commensurate with age
  • Whilst the dashboard and door panels appear to be original, the seats have been trimmed in leather
  • The carpets have been trimmed in a soft wool, as opposed to its original square weave which is coarse to the touch
  • It is now fitted with a £3,000 Becker Mexico Navigation system which was manufactured specifically for the Pagoda and other Mercedes-Benzs of the 1960s to replicate a period look and feel, but with modern internals including navigation, Bluetooth, iPod connectivity and telephone functionality
This Pagoda presents superbly throughout - a product of life-long care and attention to detail. The 2011 bodywork restoration has weathered the passage of time well, as have the various interior elements that have been subject to retrimming work. There’s no notable wear to report, no obvious signs of corrosion, damage or any notable finish imperfections we can see. It’s complete with both its folding soft top and unusual hard top which lends the W113 its ‘Pagoda’ moniker.

The Mechanics

  • 2,308 cc M127 straight-six
  • Four-speed automatic gearbox
  • Full engine and automatic transmission rebuild carried out by the vendor’s workshops in 2023
  • The vendor offers the car with a fresh service in readiness for its next owner
The vendor comments that this SL is a delight to drive with power steering and its free-revving five-main-bearing engine producing ample torque. Automatic examples such as this are the most desirable, and having been fully rebuilt, we’re informed that this example shifts well. The fuel-injected engine reportedly runs sweetly and all is in smart order under the bonnet.
