1974 Renault 6 4X4 SINPAR

Key Features

  • Rare Renault 6 with SINPAR 4x4 equipment
  • Completely rebuilt about ten years ago
  • In exceptional condition

The appeal

With the French four-wheel-drive market limited in the 1960s and 1970s, SINPAR began selling 4x4 kits for the Renault 4 and its larger, more opulent sister, the Renault 6. While the R4 proved very popular in 4x4 form, and SINPAR manufactured many kits, the R6 did not enjoy the same success. As a result, genuine 4x4 R6 models from SINPAR are highly sought-after today.

This car has to be one of the best of the lot. In 2012, the current owner embarked on a complete restoration of this 1974 model. The restoration took around two years and the car has become a magnificent example of this rare variant, in fabulous condition.

Since the restoration, the car has been wonderfully maintained with regular servicing and low mileage, meaning it runs and starts with ease. This little off-roader is similarly perfect for any lover of quirky and rarely seen French creations.

The interior

  • Completely redone interior
  • Adorable interior specification

When it was launched, the Renault 6 was a more spacious and modern version of the old R4. This is evident when you look at the interior of this particular 1974 model, which features a rather fresh interior design, impressive space at the rear and plenty of modern equipment.

Throughout the cabin, new upholstery adorns the Renault 12 TS seats, door panels and headliners. It will certainly be difficult to find more than one brand inside the car. Although the interior was redone some ten years ago, it has clearly been very well maintained over the last few years. As a result, the whole interior looks fresh.

According to the owner, the dashboard is showing some signs of age. However, this doesn't mean that it looks bad. It blends in perfectly with the good condition of the rest of the vehicle. However, a new one will be sold with the car.
The boot lining is certainly not as fresh as the interior. On the other hand, the floor seems to be in very good condition.

The exterior

  • The styling of the Renault 6 is fabulous
  • The caramel paintwork is magnificent
  • Very good overall condition
  • A lot of rust has been removed and repaired

Using similar architecture to the 4, the Renault 6 takes on many of the visual characteristics of its lovely predecessor, not least its dimensions. In fact, the overall shape is similar between the two models, with the newer R6 proving more angular and modern. However, the car retains the wonderful character of the R4.

This car is covered in a beautiful coat of yellow paint, which presents itself perfectly thanks to the restoration work that has ironed out the flaws in the paintwork and bodywork. In fact, the entire bodywork was revised during the restoration, as numerous photos demonstrate. The SINPAR branding completes the package, along with the attractive wheel rims.

All signs of corrosion were also removed, and new metal was welded in place. The result is a very clean chassis that has since been protected by a rustproof coating.

Powertrain

  • 1.1-litre in-line four-cylinder engine, 47 bhp
  • SINPAR 4x4 system
  • Completely revised powertrain

The star of this little hatchback is of course its SINPAR 4x4 system, which makes it a rare car.

This 4x4 system is powered by a modest 1.1-litre four-cylinder engine developing around 47 bhp. This power first passes through a fully synchronised four-speed manual gearbox before being transmitted to all four wheels.

During the restoration of this car, a great deal of attention was obviously paid to its mechanics. The engine was dismantled, the cylinder head repaired and new accessories such as oil and water pumps fitted. The rear axle also received special attention.

Today, the car should run and start without any problems. We have no reason to suspect any problems or faults.

Summary

An already rare and desirable variant of the French family car, this Renault 6 TL SINPAR is in fantastic condition thanks to a complete restoration undertaken some ten years ago. Visually and mechanically, this model appears to be in very good condition and will fit perfectly into a collection of rare French vehicles.
