If you can’t beat them, join them. That was surely the motto when BMW watched what arch rivals Mercedes-Benz had achieved in the mid size saloon market and decided it wanted some of the action.
BMW poached the firm’s designer, Paul Bracq who, aided by none other than Marcello Gandini, quickly penned what became the classic E12, the first of the 5-Series and a car whose basic profile endures to this day.
There were a huge range of engine options, including desirable Kugelfisher fuel injected models, and the E12 sold worldwide.
This 1979 facelift 528i has recently been repatriated from Japan to Poland where it has been sympathetically recommissioned. Believed one of only 1,170 in this Japanese specification, it is highly original. Stepping into the olive green velour interior is a particular treat. This is certainly one for classic saloon enthusiast.
