The Appeal
The W108 comes from a time when the house of the three-pointed star were at their best. It felt like Mercedes-Benz could do no wrong during this time; their cars were stately, beautifully built and comfortable. Of all of the legendary executive motors they built, however, the W108 stood out as being particularly sophisticated.
Effectively a straightforward development of its much-loved predecessor, the W111 and W112 'tail' saloons, the W108 continued these cars' mastery of volume production and served to very much make Mercedes a household name. The new W108 saloons offered a particularly imposing and almost regal appearance, with large, light-filled passenger compartments with ample glass surfaces and a slightly lower stance, resulting in elegant and comfortable cars designed for an exclusive clientele, with lines that were both modern and understated.
This particular 280SE 3.5 is especially noteworthy as a rare right-hand drive variant, reportedly one of just 98 registered on UK roads according to The SL Shop, making it even rarer than its coupe counterpart. Manufactured on October 10, 1972, it's also believed to be one of the last of its line.
This 280SE appears in original condition that has never been modified, retaining its factory paint, stickers, and distinctive Cognac leather interior. Having spent approximately 20 years as part of a static collection before the current owner's 18-month stewardship, this W108 needs a little work to return to the road, but offers a fabulous foundation to do so.
