The Appeal
Over 50 years after the last cars left the line, it is hard not to still be impressed by just how innovative, ground-breaking, cutting edge and utterly brilliant the original DS was. Few cars threw away the rule book quite as forcefully as Andre Lefebvre and Flaminio Bertoni’s four door spaceship.
The car continuously evolved, notably with Robert Opron’s sleek 1967 redesign. It got more luxurious too. This 1973 model is arguably ‘peak’ DS because it is a Series 3 with the plush Pallas spec and bigger 2.3L engine with the 5spd manual gearbox. And that’s before we mention the desirable Gris Palladium finish and retrimmed black leather cabin.
First registered in the Netherlands, this DS arrived in the UK in 2018. We understand it received a restoration in the 1990s. Soon after reaching Britain an extensive two-year restoration began, completed in 2021 and costing over £10,000. The work covered repaint and a full cabin retrim, which alone cost over £8,500. The current keeper acquired it in late 2021 and has clearly looked after it because it remains in very good order. There are a few points to note in photos.
Few, if any, big saloons reward quite like a good DS. The buyer gets to benefit from this car’s extensive renovation work.
