The Appeal
There would be other, great Alfa sports cars, but the Type 116 GTV was the last of its kind. As the final sports car that was fully developed and built by Alfa Romeo before platform sharing, it draws enthusiasts like a magnet. That it is also great to drive with a transaxle layout delivering near-perfect weight balance, and has some choice engines, certainly helps.
Thanks to the people building the cars being somewhat less dedicated than the engineers who created them, survivors are sadly all too rare. Let's feast our eyes, then, on this fantastic time-warp example. Finished in classic Alfa Red, it has covered just 65,000 miles in the hands of four keepers. It is one of the nicest and most original that we’ve seen in a while.
While many gravitate to the Busso-powered GTV6, there is a strong following for cars like this one with the 2L ‘Nord’ twin cam. Lighter and not much less powerful, many argue it offers a more dynamic package. The buyer of this one gets a chance to find out, because previous and current enthusiast keepers have very well maintained the car. It was recommissioned by the last keeper after 22 years in storage in 2017, and the current one has continued the process of maintenance and improvement.
Since he acquired the car in 2018, work has included refurbishing and balancing the propshaft, carburettor overhaul, regular servicing, new distributor, new clutch and attention to the brakes. The list continues and is detailed below.
This 1983 car is now usefully MOT exempt, but it is a sign of the current keeper’s approach that he has continued to submit it for testing. That is good news for the buyer as it adds extra transparency. The current test runs to June 2026 and contains no advisories.
This is a great example of a rare yet highly rewarding Italian GT. One not to miss.
The vendor says:
Very balanced car, i used it to do the 3 day Three Castles Classic Car trials in North Wales - performed well for a standard car. Not lightening performance but it is over 40yrs old....Very few left on the road, especially with this colour combination.
“I’m a member of the Alfa club. I have all original brochures, and it has an Alfa cover for the car as well. Only selling as don't use it much now, as can be seen by MOTs.”
