The Appeal
Back in the 80s, Mercedes-Benz were beginning to cast a few quizzical glances over at the sports circuit, which at the time was dominated by Escorts and Talbots. They knew their cars were substantially better built - that was no secret - but nothing was quite competition-ready in their repertoire.
Their eyes fell on the W201 - the already remarkably well-loved saloon, which offered impressive aerodynamic performance, advanced suspension and a certain middle-class je ne sais quoi compared to its rivals. They got to work with Cosworth to homologate the 190E for DTM racing.
The resulting car built upon Merc's cast-iron block with a new aluminium twin-cam 16-valve head. Mercedes’ crank and rods were considered strong enough as they were, thanks to Stuttgart's legendary insistence on quality, so the other key mods came in with new pistons and a rather labyrinthine manifold. The rest of the homologation car maintained Mercedes' restrained, executive lines in style.
Nowadays, they're a particularly desirable classic - so we're expecting this one to pick up plenty of enthusiasm. The car has only had 3 keepers from new, and has been with the current owner since 2009. It's accompanied by an impressive cache of paperwork and has only recently enjoyed a recommissioning following a 5-year period of storage.
