Not every pre-war sporting car needs to be loud, demanding or highly strung to be enjoyable.

The Wolseley Hornet Sports has long been regarded as one of the most charming and usable light sporting cars of the early 1930s, combining compact proportions with the refinement and smooth performance of Wolseley’s delightful six-cylinder overhead-camshaft engine. Capable of comfortably cruising at 50-55 mph, it offers an engaging vintage motoring experience whilst remaining remarkably practical and enjoyable on today’s quieter roads.

Introduced in 1930, the Wolseley Hornet helped launch the growing popularity of compact six-cylinder cars. At a time when motorists sought lighter, more manageable cars without sacrificing refinement, the Hornet proved perfectly judged. Smooth, flexible and eager, its 1271cc overhead-camshaft six-cylinder engine quickly earned a reputation both on the road and in competition.

While contemporary MGs and Singer sports models often receive the limelight today, the Wolseley offers a distinctly different character. Refined, willing and surprisingly capable, it is a car that encourages relaxed touring and leaves its driver smiling long after the journey has ended.

We are delighted to offer what must rank amongst the very best examples we have encountered. Acquired by the present owner approximately twelve years ago, the car has benefitted from an extensive mechanical rebuild and highly sympathetic restoration carried out by a fastidious engineer, with considerable care taken to preserve both the character and integrity of the model.

An extensive and detailed history file accompanies the car. Due to the sheer volume of documentation, it is simply too comprehensive to list in full here, although a detailed breakdown is available to genuinely interested parties. A supporting CD containing additional records is also included.

Further enhancing the car’s appeal is a wonderful collection of period advertisements, historical notes and a particularly engaging 13-page narrative documenting the car’s story, written by the owner’s wife, formerly Secretary of the Wolseley Hornet Special Club. Together these create a fascinating archive and provide exceptional provenance.
