1958 Austin Healey 100/ 6 BN6 Two-Seater (fitted 3 litre engine)
Rare BN6 Model | South African Heritage | Overdrive | Extensive Specialist Restoration & Development
Few British sports cars capture the spirit of post-war open-air motoring quite like the ‘Big Healeys’
This particularly attractive example is the increasingly sought-after BN6 two-seater model, a far rarer proposition than the more commonly encountered four-seat versions and one that many enthusiasts actively seek today.
A significant part of this Healey’s appeal lies in its long-term South African history. Having spent much of its life in the dry inland climate before returning to the UK, it benefits from the sort of sound body and chassis that Healey buyers rightly value. It provides an excellent foundation for what is a thoroughly developed and highly usable example.
Power comes from a later 3000cc engine, complemented by an overdrive gearbox, creating a more relaxed and capable touring car. Extensive expenditure has been undertaken both in South Africa and subsequently in the UK, with considerable attention paid to ensuring the car performs as well as it presents.
Mechanical work includes professional rebuilding of the gearbox and overdrive, refurbishment of the differential and propshaft, cooling system upgrades including a re-cored radiator, together with numerous improvements aimed at reliability and usability. Further enhancements include servo-assisted brakes, front disc brake conversion and suspension upgrades, all contributing to a more confidence-inspiring driving experience.
Following its return to the UK, the Healey has benefited from the attention of respected marque specialists including Dan Howells and Bill Rawles Classic Cars. The current owner has continued to maintain the car regardless of cost, ensuring it remains a practical and enjoyable driver’s Healey rather than a car intended simply for display.
Accompanying the car is an extensive history file including workshop invoices, owner’s literature and a Heritage Certificate. It is also supplied with a tonneau cover . She has a brand-new mohair hood assembly which has yet to be fitted, allowing the next custodian to decide how they wish to proceed.
Although exempt from MOT testing, the Healey has continued to undergo annual MOT inspections, providing additional reassurance regarding its ongoing condition and roadworthiness. There is a current MOT certificate valid until June 2027. This is not a fragile concours car nor a trailer queen. Instead, it is a well-developed, mechanically sorted and genuinely usable Austin Healey with strong touring credentials, excellent specialist history and a specification that encourages regular enjoyment on modern roads.
