With a reputation for quality that other motorcycle manufacturers at the time were keen to match, Sunbeam produced some really rather lovely bikes back in the '20s and '30s and the Model 9A is no exception. An updated Model 9, the 9A was equipped with a larger single-cylinder, 600cc engine, imbuing it with a welcome turn of pace that still feels thrilling today.
The current vendor bought this particular Sunbeam as an almost completely disassembled machine in 2012 from the previous owner, Graham, who had been its custodian since the '70s. Having been on the road until the early '80s Graham had decided to restore the bike to its former glory but unfortunately due to family problems this never happened.
Since then, a considerable amount of time has been lavished on the Sunbeam, and with no expense spared it has been brought back to life over the course of a dedicated 12 year restoration. The engine appears to be the uprated version used in the model 95 which Sunbeam produced as a racing derivative and the bike retains its original 1930s number plate, further adding to the bike's appeal and vintage charm.
The level of work that has gone into the restoration is clear to see and the bike presents as close as to a brand new Sunbeam as it's possible to get. Everything works as it should and although a new dynamo has been fitted it has not yet been connected. The original headlamp switch has two positions for charging [half and full] so the new owner can decide how to wire it up.
There is a thriving Sunbeam owners club with regular ride outs and an exceptionally good spares scheme. Not only that but it's full of incredibly helpful enthusiasts available to offer advice if needed. The current owner tells us the bike is "a pleasure to ride" so if you want a weekend two-wheeled toy or are interested in dipping your toes into the world of historic motorcycling then this is the steed for you. image.png4.54 MB
