The Appeal

With production spanning an astonishing 82 years, the Morgan 4/4 still stands as the longest-running production vehicle in the world. We’re delighted to offer this early example, dating from the second year of production. It has been restored and upgraded during present ownership and with just nine miles covered since, this 4/4 is ready to be run in and enjoyed.
Acquired by the vendor as a partially restored barn find that had been in storage for many years, this Morgan was little more than a rolling chassis. Its aluminium body and steel scuttle had been mounted to a new ash frame although this remained parted from the chassis. 

Much of the steel bodywork including the bonnet and rear wings was beyond salvation, and so much of the finished car had to be renewed. The same goes for the interior, wiring and instruments, but crucially, the current V5, a continuation V5 and a host of old documentation including the original chassis plate were with the car. 
Sourcing an original Coventry Climax engine and Meadows gearbox proved challenging, so the decision was made to update the Morgan’s mechanicals rather than waiting to find the original powertrain. The fitment of an overhauled 1300 cc Triumph Dolomite engine and four-speed Toledo gearbox have enhanced its usability and we’re assured the 4/4 is in rude health.

The History and Paperwork

  • Early 4/4 with chassis number 279
  • Retains its chassis plate which confirms the original chassis and engine numbers
  • Period-correct registarton ‘CTB 39’
  • Exempt from road tax and MOT testing
  • The current V5, a continuation V5 and a large collection of old documentation were present when the vendor acquired the car
  • Photographic record of some of the restoration work
  • Various Triumph manuals are supplied which relate to the mechanicals
  • Various invoices accompany the car

The Condition

  • Impeccably presented inside, out and underneath
  • Finished in cream to an exceptional standard
  • New Connaught Green PVC hood with a zipped rear window 
  • New three-three piece mohair tonneau
  • The seat squabs, bench back and all interior trim has been renewed - all in new green leather with new black ribbed carpets
  • All the lights are new - the headlights and spotlight are mounted on a stainless steel carrier, side lights are integral to the headlights and the front indicators are on the wings
  • To the rear, there are rear fog and reversing lights, two standard rear lights (with brake lights), a third high-level brake light mounted on the spare wheel bracket and the rear indicators in pods 
  • Mounted in an ash dashboard all of the switches are a later rocker type except for the slick type indicator and main/dip switches -  (the main dip switch is fitted at the rear of the gear lever) 
  • A Triumph Herald speedometer with an integral fuel gauge has been installed along with a separate voltmeter, combined oil pressure and water temperature gauges
  • Smart steel wheels finished in gloss black and shod with modern tyres
  • All the chrome looks to be in fantastic condition, having been restored and replaced as necessary 

The Mechanics 

  • “Flat-rad” radiator
  • Triumph Dolomite 1300 cc four-cylinder engine fitted
  • A 32/36 DGMS Weber carburettor is fitted 
  • The cylinder head was rebuilt by Cambridge Re-bores
  • Canley Classics rebored the block, ground the crankshaft and fitted new bearings and pistons
  • Triumph Toledo four-speed gearbox mounted amidships
  • Bespoke transmission housing fabricated by a local specialist 
  • JB Sports Ltd serviced the rear axle (with new seals and bearings)
  • The gearbox was serviced by First Motion Ltd (also with new seals and bearings)
  • Unassisted brakes (no servo)
  • The vendor reports that it runs very well and drives nicely
  • With only nine miles covered, the Morgan requires driving and tuning to run it in properly
