The Appeal
During the early 1960s Mercedes-Benz were building some of the greatest cars in the world. Costing almost twice as much as a W111 220 WE, the W112 300 SE sat alongside the 300d and 600 which topped the Mercedes-Benz range. Behind its elegant Paul Bracq styling, it featured an engine very similar to that of the 300 SL ‘Gullwing’ and an innovative air suspension system. A high list price kept sales and therefore production figures low and so it’s understood that only 2,419 were ever made - making this a very rare car indeed!
This 1964 Coupé is particularly handsome in its Papyrus White with ‘wine red’ leather. Accompanied by a substantial history file containing numerous invoices, this car continues to be immensely smart inside, out and underneath. The vendor informs us that the car is exempt from road tax in the Netherlands, where it has been registered since 1996.

This Mercedes’ interior is a masterclass in design. It’s both luxurious and minimalist, with a typically Teutonic emphasis on quality over opulence.
The Zebrano woodwork is a particular delight, cleverly enveloping the instrument binnacle and spanning the width of the ornate dashboard. All the woodwork, and other trims are in fine order, as the the gauges and switches within the dash.
There’s very little wear to the upholstery, carpeting or headlining. All are in good order and feature materials of the highest quality. It would appear to have been restored in recent years and there’s certainly no damage so far as we could see.

Paul Bracq knows a thing or two about designing beautiful cars and the W112 is one of his greatest hits. It looks particularly fine in Coupé form and this example is especially handsome in Papyrus White.
The bodywork is all very straight, free from accident damage or any signs of corrosion. Mercedes-Benz were known for their extensive use of chrome during this period and this is no exception, with very solid bumpers and of course that distinctive radiator grille. All the brightwork looks good with some light pitting and we only spotted the one small dent in the offside of the rear bumper.

- The vendor reports two minor fluid leaks however the vendor informs us the leaks will be repaired in the instance of a successful sale.
With a fuel injected straight-six engine closely related to that in the 300 SL, the W112 was revered for its performance and reliability. Driving the rear wheels via an automatic gearbox, equipped with power steering and air suspension, it was the top choice for long distance touring, covering miles with ease.
