The Appeal
While the Square-bodied Sprites may look decidedly less 'cute' than their predecessor, there's little doubt that they maintained its ethos. These lightweight, mechanically simple cars were created with the idea of being 'a car that a chap could keep in his bike shed', and it was this purposefully humble nature that cemented them as a mainstay of the leisure driver.
Also marketed as the 'New MG Midget Mk2', the MK3 Sprite was hardly a revolution. The car was treated to some minor styling revisions and the introduction of Semi-elliptical springs, which made for an altogether more comfortable right - without increasing costs by a significant margin. It was staying true to the formula that helped the MK3 sell in excess of 25,000 units.
This particular example was initially somewhat of a barn find, with the previous owner restoring it back to its former glory in 1988. Since then, it's led a charmed life, and continues to be a head turner at car shows and rallies - while still being an eminently drivable, stylish little classic.
