The Appeal
Three simple letters reveal why the TR4A is special. The ‘IRS’ independent rear suspension makes these Michelotti-penned cars as driveable they are pretty. A good TR4A IRS is one of the most entertaining and rewarding British 60s classics money can buy.
The current and previous keepers of this handsome dark blue ‘66 TR4A clearly agree. They have lavished it with investment and improvement since it was comprehensive restored in the early 00s. That work was begun by an enthusiast well-known in Triumph circles who evolved this car into a hill climb competitor. The work was so good that it featured in Triumph World in 2001.
The car has subsequently been returned to road spec but retains some of those desirable features. During the last couple of years over £5,000 has been invested including engine, bodywork, trim, suspension work, new heater matrix and rear brake overhaul.
The car presents very well and is in very good running order. It is a mark of the current keeper’s fastidious approach that it carries a full 12 month MOT despite this being entirely voluntary on a car of this age. Naturally, there are no advisories.

The Condition
- Older restoration in dark blue which remains very well kept
- The paintwork generally presents well with light ageing typical of older repaint
- This include light undulations in paint and some light marks and chips

- Bodywork is very good following older restoration including panel fit to doors
- There are some minor areas to note such as small bubbles to top of nearside wing
- Offside front wing modified to accommodate engine cut off switch previously for hill climb use
- Chromework in good order with light patina of tarnish to certain components but also not unsightly
- Sits on painted wire wheels in good order with quality vintage tyres
- Underside recently undersealed and no structural issues on current MOT
- Features large rear luggage rack in chrome and ‘bullet’ style door mirrors
- Lights front and rear in good order with no damage reported
- Grilles, badging and other exterior fittings present well with some light age
- Smart retrimmed leather interior with white piping to factory-correct seat finish
- Seats appear to show no notable wear to usual high traffic areas such as bolsters
- Seat foam and frames recently renewed
- Black carpets in good order with no obvious tears or wear reported
- Veneer dashboard is very smart with correct Smiths dials including auxiliary oil gauge
- Some additional switchgear to centre console due to previous hill climb use
- Door cards fit well and have been replaced in recent years
- Roof fits well with no splits or tears reported
- Three spoke classic-style wood-rimmed wheel in very good condition
- No reported faults with electrics, lighting, switchgear or dials
