The Appeal

Launched in 1968, the new Suzuki T500 was Japan’s response the British 500cc twins that had been a great sales success in the USA. Built around a large and solid frame, the T500s were powered by cleverly designed 492cc two stroke engine that was over engineered in many areas resulting in a reputation for reliability, plenty of torque and somewhat surprisingly,-economy.  On a good run the Suzuki could achieve 42mpg, with 47bhp and a top speed of 105mph.  These figures were seriously impressive at the time, and when combined with bullet proof reliability, the T500 soon gained legendary status amongst fans of classic 1970s motorbikes.
Purchased by the Seller in 2021 this T500 remains virtually as it came from the factory, bar some recently completed restoration work.  From the final year of T500 production (prior to the introduction of the GT500) it is a MkIII version which benefitted from various improvements including longer swing arms to improve handling, increased gearbox oil capacity, a strengthened bottom end and stronger pistons as used in the GT750.  Upon purchase it transpired to have some electrical issues, and the decision was made to re-wire the Suzuki.  

This, along with other work, was carried out in May/June last year with a resulting bill for over £2,000. Since then it has been ridden just 82 miles, and unfortunately is now offered for sale due to ill health. It is reported to ride perfectly with no issues, nothing that requires attention and with only minor age related marks.  A legend of the Japanese motorcycle world it would make a fantastic addition to a collection of landmark motorcycles of the 20th Century.
