The Appeal
After years of producing the lackadaisical Hillman Minx under licence, likely nobody expected what came next. The Bellett was Isuzu’s first in-house designed compact car, and it was a masterstroke. Advanced engineering, like fully independent suspension and rack and pinion steering delivered sporty handling. The arrival of the GT in 1964 provided the performance to match the agility, plus improved braking thanks to its front disc brakes. The Bellett looked good too, particularly the coupe, which was available from April 1966.
This early coupe is a ‘67 model, so is fitted with the later 'G161' 90bhp 1.6-litre engine with twin SU carburettors. It is an unmodified, factory-correct car finished in appropriate ‘racing red’, and presented in great condition inside and out.
The Bellett GT coupe makes an interesting and entertaining alternative to more common European coupes. Here is a rare survivor and a chance to discover just how good they are.
