The Appeal
This TR6 Restomod is so clever and appropriate that we’re surprised more people don’t follow the same route. It is now fitted with another fuel injected straight six, this time BMW’s highly regarded M50 2.5L engine that ups power to 192bhp. The engine is mated to a ZF 5spd manual, as fitted to the E36. The suspension has been uprated by TR6 specialists Revington TR.
Marque specialist Grosvenor Motor Company of Reading undertook the BMW conversion. It included fitting a BMW DME control unit so that the diagnostics can be checked as required.
Without all that foreknowledge, or lifting the bonnet, you’ll struggle to spot the work because this ‘71 TR6’s looks have been usefully kept standard. All the better for surprising fellow drivers. Finished in red with uprated interior featuring MX5 seats, refurbished dashboard and modern classic-look dials - to suit the updated mechanicals - this is also a well-kept car.
It has covered only 4,000 miles since the work, including a recent 500-mile fuss-free trip by the seller. The history file shows regular maintenance and servicing. Recent work includes new front discs, callipers, and a new battery. The vendor tells us that it drives and sounds fantastic and has been 100% reliable.
It may upset the purists, but when the work is this well done and the results so potent, frankly, who cares?
