The Appeal
The Unimog’s nickname is derived from its official ‘Universal Motor Device’ name, a moniker that really tells you all you need to know about how capable these iconic vehicles are. Originally introduced in 1948 as the Boehringer 70200, they were designed as AWD agricultural tractors, equipment carriers, and utility vehicles, essentially for getting stuff and people from A to B, wherever A or B happened to be.
The 401 was built between 1953 and 1956 and was the first Unimog to feature Mercedes’ three-pointed star. It also introduced the ‘Froschauge’ (frog-eye) style that has become an enduring part of the model’s history.
This rather fantastic 401 is an extensively restored example in cream with black trim, red wheels and a wood-lined pickup bed. It is a great example, evidently restored to a high standard and remaining in very good order. For agricultural enthusiasts, or collectors of Stuttgart’s more esoteric models, this is a proper find.
