The appeal

Here is a car you certainly don’t come across every day: a Formula 3 single-seater registered for road use.

This one-off example was designed and built around a tubular steel chassis with a 30 x 30 mm square cross-section, combined with mechanical components sourced from 1960s Renault models, all of which have been modified and machined to meet the requirements of Formula 3 at the time.

At the heart of the car lies a 956 cm³ Gordini engine, reputed to be identical to the competition units developed for the Matra Djet. Mounted in a rear-mid position, it is coupled to a reversed four-speed Renault Dauphine gearbox via a machined aluminium adapter plate. The suspension features wishbones fitted with Uniball-type ball joints and adjustable De Carbon shock absorbers with combined springs, whilst braking is provided by disc brakes on all four wheels, combined with aluminium calipers and an adjustable dual-master-cylinder system.

The car was registered as a private vehicle by its manufacturer in 1960, a relatively common practice at the time, but one which today makes this particular example truly unique. A road lighting system and a horn have been fitted to meet road traffic requirements; these items can be easily removed for use on the racetrack.

Acquired from a collector in 2020, this single-seater has covered very few miles since its restoration. Its engine will require running-in on a suitable circuit. Featuring a fibreglass bodywork painted in the famous Gordini Blue, it represents a rare opportunity to acquire an authentic single-seater registered for road use, restored in keeping with its era and boasting a genuine pedigree.
