The Appeal
The 101-series Giulia Spider is among the most desirable open-top sports cars of the 1960s. Styled by Pininfarina and powered by Alfa Romeo's celebrated twin-cam four-cylinder engine, it was a heady, elegant and undeniably fun motor that's stood the test of time. It's pure Alfa magic, and has arguably never been so coveted as it is today.
This 1962 example, finished in black over a red interior, has been in the same family's hands since 1998 — a period of some 28 years. Purchased by the seller's late father, it underwent a comprehensive restoration before being re-registered in 2002, with the car reassembled to as close to original specification as possible.
The bodywork and paintwork appear to be in very good order, and while some paint touch-ups may be desired for concours-level presentation, the car is well-suited to driving use as it stands. On the mechanical side, some recommissioning work is needed — the sort one might expect of a car that has seen limited use in recent years. We're informed by the vendor that the car is very smooth to drive and ideal for leisurely outings.
Bodywork is in very good condition and suitable for driving use
Some paint touch-ups would be needed for exhibition in a collection or museum setting
Interior was restored in 2002 and shows very slight signs of wear
Handsome from top to bottom, this impressive Spider is an incredible ambassador for Pininfarina's uncanny design skills. Subtle rear fins, perfectly moulded curves and a distinctive grille all come together to make one of the most iconic sports cars of the age. This example is a good, solid one, with gentle age-commensurate patina on a straight, nicely-kept body shell. The restoration back in 2002 is holding up very nicely.
Internally, this holds true. A soft wear has bedded in that makes the car's elegant cabin feel lived in and loved, with no rips and tears or intrusive issues spoiling the glamorous, straightforward image. The instruments are clean and legible, while the boot is well-presented. 1077 RS for Cedric Libon.JPG6.47 MB
The Mechanics
1.6-litre Alfa Romeo Twin-Cam
Manual transmission with 5 gears
Mechanically standard
Engine bay appears in good order
Foreseeable costs include replacement of the brake master cylinder with bleeding
A minor service and engine adjustment are also needed
The Alfa Romeo Twin-Cam is the stuff of legend. Charismatic, fast, capable - it's the only choice for an Italian sports car, and continues to garner plenty of admiration. These days, it's perfect for leisurely touring, but it'll still feel every bit as sharp, agile and capable as ever it was.
This very original car hasn't seen the road properly in quite some time, and may need a little work before it can really become a regular runner. However, the vendor reports that the car is otherwise in fine health, and will be an eminently drivable classic when complete. 1152 RS for Cedric Libon.JPG16.72 MB
